Artificial Intelligence – From Science Fiction to Reality: Strategies, Challenges & Best-Practices for Cities AI, Machine Learning, Neural Networks… These concepts sound like they are just out of the lab. However, several governments are using these data-driven systems to operate infrastructure, inform or take decisions. By analysing a number of real-world AI applications in cities (directly with those using them) as well as the policy frameworks cities are putting in place to guarantee an ethical use, participants will gain insight to evaluate not just the benefits, but also the risks and ways to address them in advance. The session will discuss with practitioners from leading cities how AI systems are currently used in urban contexts, and how they are tackling the challenges and risks associated to their use. It has been held in Berlin every year since 2018 and has since inspired partner events around the world. In 2020 and 2021, the event with 400 speakers and 150 sessions was purely digital, gathering up to 18,000 minds and ideas over a week. Central to each day was the Highlight Hour, where festival president Charles Landry and television journalist Astrid Frohloff presented the day’s highlights.

Technology is growing with each day and its growing speed is something we have never seen before. We didn’t know what smartphones were two decades ago but now, they’ve become almost a part of our bodies. A big majority of people have become daily users of social media platforms and similar sites which have been around for decades. Technology’s impact on our daily lives has been quick and powerful, but how do you think its impact on our professional lives will be? Engineers’ professional lives always involve technology, and the latest developments in the artificial intelligence area can change the engineering concepts radically. Robotics and engineering go hand in hand, and the future of AI has the potential to make human life easier and safer than ever before. According to Elon Musk, Tesla’s Autopilot feature can help in reducing highway accidents thanks to its intelligent engineering. Also, founders and CEOs of big technology corporations such as Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai, and Tim Cook have also stated the importance and potential of artificial intelligence for humankind. Artificial intelligence can help us find new solutions to our engineering problems and make our tasks easier to tackle. Technological developments have been quick and efficient for the past decades and it seems that this snowball effect has not reached its full potential yet. Artificial intelligence holds great opportunities for tomorrow’s engineers, and if you want to learn more about the subject, be sure to watch our video! Elon Musk, Stuart Russell, Ray Kurzweil, Demis Hassabis, Sam Harris, Nick Bostrom, David Chalmers, Bart Selman, and Jaan Tallinn discuss with Max Tegmark (moderator) what likely outcomes might be if we succeed in building human-level AGI, and also what we would like to happen. The Beneficial AI 2017 Conference: In our sequel to the 2015 Puerto Rico AI conference, we brought together an amazing group of AI researchers from academia and industry, and thought leaders in economics, law, ethics, and philosophy for five days dedicated to beneficial AI. We hosted a two-day workshop for our grant recipients and followed that with a 2.5-day conference, in which people from various AI-related fields hashed out opportunities and challenges related to the future of AI and steps we can take to ensure that the technology is beneficial.
