Richard Socher (Salesforce) @ the Cornell Tech Learning Machines Seminar Series (LMSS — http://lmss.tech.cornell.edu/). TITLE: The Natural Language Decathlon: Multitask Learning as Question Answering ABSTRACT: Deep learning has improved performance on many natural language processing (NLP) tasks individually. However, general NLP models cannot emerge within a paradigm that focuses on the particularities of a single metric, dataset, and task. We introduce the Natural Language Decathlon (decaNLP), a challenge that spans ten tasks: question answering, machine translation, summarization, natural language inference, sentiment analysis, semantic role labeling, zero-shot relation extraction, goal-oriented dialogue, semantic parsing, and commonsense pronoun resolution. We cast all tasks as question answering over a context. Furthermore, we present a new Multitask Question Answering Network (MQAN) jointly learns all tasks in decaNLP without any task-specific modules or parameters in the multitask setting. MQAN shows improvements in transfer learning for machine translation and named entity recognition, domain adaptation for sentiment analysis and natural language inference, and zero-shot capabilities for text classification. We demonstrate that the MQAN’s multi-pointer-generator decoder is key to this success and performance further improves with an anti-curriculum training strategy. Though designed for decaNLP, MQAN also achieves state of the art results on the WikiSQL semantic parsing task in the single-task setting. We release code for procuring and processing data, training and evaluating models, and reproducing all experiments for decaNLP. BIO: Richard Socher is Chief Scientist at Salesforce. Richard Socher is the Chief Scientist at Salesforce and one of the leading researchers in deep learning and natural language processing as an adjunct professor at Stanford University’s Department of Computer Science. In this video he presents at our recent AirTree Speaker Series event in partnership with the Melbourne ML/AI community. First up, Richard takes us through his team’s recent research on the Natural Language Decathlon: Multitask Learning as Question Answering (https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.08730), a new paradigm for natural language learning that casts all tasks as question answering over a context. Then he sits down with John Henderson, one of the partners at AirTree Ventures, to talk about the global landscape for AI including recent big milestones, what’s hype vs reality, and what the opportunities are for start-ups in the space.
“Hey do you want to go paramotoring?” This may not be the typical way an IT conversation starts, but it just might be the way you begin an interaction with Richard Socher. Especially if you’re near a beautiful vista or in any gorgeous outdoor setting. But paramotoring is only Richard’s hobby, his job is Chief Scientist for Salesforce. As the Chief Scientist, Richard wears a couple of different hats. He and his team focus on publishing new research data, doing applied research, incubating, and working on the capabilities of Salesforce’s platform. The type of work Richard and his team do extends across many fields, but lately, they have been narrowing in on A.I. and all things Salesforce Einstein Voice Assistant. On this episode of IT Visionaries, Richard talks about his origins, including the work he did as the founder, CEO and CTO of MetaMind, the current and future state of affairs of A.I. and voice, and yes, his love of paramotoring. Key Takeaways: How A.I. can have a positive impact What is the future of voice technology? Today we’re joined Richard Socher, Chief Scientist and Executive VP at Salesforce. Richard, who has been at the forefront of Salesforce’s AI Research since they acquired his startup Metamind in 2016, and his team have been publishing a ton of great projects as of late, including CTRL: A Conditional Transformer Language Model for Controllable Generation, and ProGen, an AI Protein Generator, both of which we cover in-depth in this conversation. We explore the balancing act between investments, product requirement research and otherwise at a large product-focused company like Salesforce, the evolution of his language modeling research since being acquired, and how it ties in with Protein Generation. The complete show notes for this episode can be found at twimlai.com/talk/372.
Richard Tang of Zen Internet recently gave a presentation at the LINX105 member conference on artificial intelligence, specifically focussing on when AI is likely to become super-intelligent. In an industry where the pace of change is so great making predictions on this potentially globally life-changing subject isn’t easy but Richard takes an approach that covers human values as well technical enhancements.
Scale By the Bay 2019 is held on November 13-15 in sunny Oakland, California, on the shores of Lake Merritt: https://scale.bythebay.io. Join us! —– In this talk, I will describe deep learning algorithms that learn representations for language that are useful for solving a variety of complex language problems. I will focus on 3 tasks: Fine-Grained sentiment analysis; Question answering to win trivia competitions (like Whatson’s Jeopardy system but with one neural network); Multimodal sentence-image embeddings (with a fun demo!) to find images that visualize sentences. I will also show some demos of how deepNLP can be made easy to use with MetaMind.io’s software. Richard Socher is the CTO and founder of MetaMind, a startup that seeks to improve artificial intelligence and make it widely accessible. He obtained his PhD from Stanford working on deep learning with Chris Manning and Andrew Ng. He is interested in developing new AI models that perform well across multiple different tasks in natural language processing and computer vision. He was awarded the 2011 Yahoo! Key Scientific Challenges Award, the Distinguished Application Paper Award at ICML 2011, a Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship in 2012 and a 2013 ‘Magic Grant’ from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation and the 2014 GigaOM Structure Award.

This presentation took place at the RE•WORK Deep Learning Summit in San Francisco on 28-29 January 2016: https://re-work.co/events/deep-learning-sanfran-2016 Multimodal Question Answering for Language and Vision Deep Learning has made tremendous breakthroughs possible in visual understanding and speech recognition. Ostensibly, this is not the case in natural language processing (NLP) and higher level reasoning. However, it only appears that way because there are so many different tasks in NLP and no single one of them, by itself, captures the complexity of language. I will talk about dynamic memory networks for question answering. This model architecture and task combination can solve a wide variety of visual and NLP problems, including those that require reasoning. They could one day, Dawkins suggests, study us the same way that we studied other beings that once ruled the earth. Sound crazy? Open your mind and think about it.
