To begin we need to understand one simple thing about humans, and that is the computational power of our brains. The average brain has an estimated number of neurons in the billions, or 100 billion neurons to be more precise, and by now we know that each neuron is capable of in between 200 – 1000 hertz of equivalent computing power.

AI still needs a lot of energy to solve simple tasks.

In the summer of 1956, several key figures in what would become known as the field of “artificial intelligence” met at Dartmouth College to brainstorm about the future of the synthetic mind. Artificial intelligence, broadly defined, has since become a part of everyday life. Although we are still waiting on promises of “strong AI” capable of approximating human thought, the widespread use of artificial intelligence has the potential to reshape medicine, finance, war, and other important aspects of society. The Center for Internet and Society, along with the Stanford Law and Technology Association (SLATA), and the Stanford Technology Law Review (STLR) bring together four scholars who have begun to examine the near term, short term, and long term ramifications of artificial intelligence for law and society. This panel follows up on our Legal Challenges in an Age of Robotics panel from November 2009.

► A digital artist is teaching machines how to interpret paintings as real life people and results are amazing. Nathan Shipley is a San Francisco based artist who uses latest digital technology and in particular Artificial Intelligence to create some pretty cool artistic stuff. In 2018 he used Deepfake technology to bring to life Salvador Dali for the Dali Museum in Florida, who was able to talk and interact with visitors. In his latest project, using machine learning and generative art, he is exploring how artificial intelligence recreates historical figures from paintings. Stanford professors discuss their innovative research and the new technologies that will transform lives in the 21st century.

At a live taping of The Future of Everything, a SiriusXM radio program hosted by Stanford bioengineering professor Russ Altman, two Stanford engineering professors discussed their contributions to two of the tech world’s most cutting edges: artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. Computer scientist Fei-Fei Li and mechanical engineer Chris Gerdes spoke about their work pushing the boundaries of what machines can do, and the many ways that our lives will be impacted by interactions with technology in the very near future – if not today.

Li outlined some of the major advances that have pushed AI research forward in the years since she entered the field in 2000, a period in which data collection and computing power flourished and “started to converge in a way that most people didn’t expect.” After touching on her seminal work in automated image classification, Li moved on to some of her current projects “using AI to play the guardian angel role in health care.” For instance, she’s working on how sensors installed in senior living facilities can balance care with independence, and track living behaviors such as motion patterns, social activity, nutrition intake and sleep patterns – all of which could help early detection of things like dementia. “This is why I call it a guardian angel. It’s quiet, it’s continuous, it doesn’t interrupt your life, but it’s there for you and providing the help when needed.”

As a leader in the field of self-driving cars, Gerdes said he’s confident that we can soon give cars the skills of the very best human drivers, and maybe even better than that. The bigger issues, he said, have more to do with designing public policies for self-driving cars and asking questions like whether we program automated vehicles to do what humans do or what the law says. And we can’t afford to put these questions off. “The proliferation of this technology will be much faster than people realize,” Gerdes said. “The real risk is how do we make sure that it’s accessible, affordable, sustainable transportation for everyone.”

Li and Gerdes agreed that the question is less whether artificial intelligence and smart machines will happen, but rather what we need to do to responsibly prepare for them. “With the speed of technology improving, the age of humans and machines coworking and coexisting together has begun,” Li said. “And this is more reason to invest in more basic science research, from technology to laws to moral philosophy and ethics to really give us guidance in terms of how humans can coexist with machines.”

Artificial intelligence is the name given to technologies that mimic the human mind. These technologies do this by performing cognitive functions like the brain, as they learn and analyze the data fed to them. Machine learning, algorithms, and deep learning are all such technologies.
Health Sector and Technology
The health sector is ripe for technological innovations, especially from advancements in AI and machine learning. Robotics and machines are not the innovations sought out these days, but technologies that mimic the human mind are more resourceful and helpful in certain areas.
These areas include diagnosis, radiology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, treatment and monitoring, and personalized medicine. The computers are fed data into them to make a data bank, after which they can assess the current case in hand.
A Correct Diagnosis – First Step in Saving Lives
Diagnosis issues have plagued the medical world for a long period of time. The tremendous load on healthcare professionals and dubious history records makes it extremely tough for them to diagnose diseases quickly. With its raw processing power and large swathes of data, AI can predict diseases at a faster rate. According to a study, AI detected breast cancer faster than healthcare specialists.
Here are some AI applications at the forefront of AI diagnosis miracle:
PathAI – Helps in Cancer diagnoses.
Buoy Health – An accurate symptom checker of various diseases (uses a chatbot)
Freenome – Early detection of cancer made possible through screenings
Drug Development with AI
Perhaps the greatest leap in the healthcare sector has been observed in drug development. The cost of research and development can be massive when prospecting drugs. Holding a clinical trial for a specific drug costs about $2.6 billion, which is a lot of money especially if the drug does not work out.
AI can help fast-track this process by building models of different drugs and their effectiveness even before being put on trial. The fast-tracking of the COVID-19 vaccine has significantly reduced the downtime for vaccine administration.

Berg – A company that used Interrogative Biology and AI to find candidates that fight rare diseases better. It helps them to formulate better drugs.

Patient Treatment and Monitoring
One of the most pressing issues for medicare specialists and healthcare providers is the sheer numbers they have to deal with daily. The workload leads to gaps in administration and poor patient management.
AI is bridging this gap by allowing physicians and healthcare workers to focus on more pressing issues. AI has the ability to go through and analyze millions of data points, check patient histories in mere seconds, and check the availability of rooms and staff. It makes the work of the administration that much easier.
Olive – It is the quintessential time-saver for healthcare professionals by completing the most oft-repeated tasks. It automates eligibility checks, data migrations, and patient claims.
Events – Another application that helps professionals prioritize room allocation by ranking emergency nature, illness stage, and ambulance routes.
Babylon Health – It uses a chatbot to review patient data and assimilating patient history. The symptoms are reviewed by AI and shortlisted for further appointments with a relevant doctor.
The future of medicine certainly includes greater integration with AI. The most miraculous uses of the technology have probably yet to be realized.

Adam Ford argues for the position that Artificial Intelligence Will Be Smarter Than Humans in the lifetime of a young adult (sometime before the end of this century). This was one side of a debate put on my Melbourne University for a philosophy course. Adam discusses reasons why AI becoming smarter than human level intelligence is likely and important – approaches to thinking about the issue, what evidence there is for AI becoming superintelligent, what experts think about this issue, the history of the idea., the potential outcomes of superhuman AI, what’s at stake.. and more.
