THE FUTURE IS HERE

Purdue Expert: Microelectronics

Media is welcome to use this video for TV, radio or podcasts or pull quotes for print articles.

Peter Bermel is the Elmore Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. Recent supply chain issues have led to a chip shortage. Why has this been so impactful? In this video, he explains what microelectronics are (small electronic circuits), what they are used for and how this technology will continue to grow. Bermel says that microelectronics are found in things people use every day, including smartphones, cars and aircraft. These microelectronics are also critical to national security. Global positioning systems (GPS), military vehicles and communication networks all utilize this technology. Bermel predicts that there will be many areas of growth within microelectronics, especially in entertainment and communication. He also explains the differences between semiconductors, microchips and microelectronics.
