MIT grad student Joy Buolamwini was working with facial analysis software when she noticed a problem: the software didn’t detect her face — because the people who coded the algorithm hadn’t taught it to identify a broad range of skin tones and facial structures. Now she’s on a mission to fight bias in machine learning, a phenomenon she calls the “coded gaze.” It’s an eye-opening talk about the need for accountability in coding … as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our lives.

Mr_LRB says:

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that every time she said "Coded Gaze", I heard it as "coded gays" and got really confused about what that had to do with coding until she showed us the Coded Gaze webpage. Still a good and eye-opening talk though.

fkhoshnasib says:

why is down? May be we can help fund it again?

Thee Greatest Ever says:

This was such an important TD Talk. I cant believe I just recently found out about it when diving deep into AI and using it in my apps but I am glad I didnt find out later.
