Yoon and Mattarella agree to cooperate in hydrogen energy, artificial intelligence, space technology

한-이탈리아 정상, ‘수소•AI•우주’ 협력 확대 합의

Staying with President Yoon,
South Korea and Italy have long been friends, with 140 years of diplomatic ties, and Italy providing support during the Korean War.
Today, the leaders of the two countries promised an even deeper relationship, by working together in different sectors and space technology.
Our Kim Do-yeon has the details.

President Yoon Suk Yeol gave a warm welcome to his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday at the Yongsan Presidential Office, with a display by the military firing a blank-rounds salute to signify the auspiciousness of the occasion.
Soon after, the two walked in for a summit, to discuss deepening economic and cultural cooperation, while acknowledging each other as key partners in security.

“Despite the geographical distance, it was confirmed that Korea and Italy recognize each other as friendly and closely related countries in terms of democratic values, geopolitical vision, international alliances, and support for inclusive multilateralism.”

This was all part of the state visit by the Italian President, only the second time President Yoon has hosted another head of state for the highest-level visit to South Korea.

“The state visit comes as next year marks the 140th anniversary since the countries established diplomatic ties. The two also share a deep friendship as Italy provided medical support to South Korea during the Korean War.”

The two countries continue to enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship, with the year 2022 recording the highest trade volume between them at 13.5 billion U.S. dollars.
And, the two leaders are looking to further that as they witnessed an MOU signing ceremony at the Presidential Office on industrial cooperation.
One MOU, signed between the Korea Aerospace Research Institution and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, is a significant move as South Korea is looking to launch its own aerospace agency possibly within this year.
They also agreed to cooperate in hydrogen energy and artificial intelligence.
In terms of security, the two leaders agreed to support each other as well.

To be specific, the two countries will cooperate in maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula while supporting Ukraine and condemning Russia for its unlawful invasion.
In terms of culture, President Mattarella also highlighted Korea and Italy’s deep roots in history, and hoped for more exchanges regarding this aspect going forward.
In the meantime, President Yoon has accepted President Mattarella’s invitation to visit Italy, and will be planning for a trip to Rome.
