We perceive emotions to be fundamentally human – even though it is not always so easy to correctly identify them in another human being. Could AI systems be taught to do just that? Using facial cues as their input, current facial recognition software tries to discern and process human emotions. To understand who could benefit from this technology, but also how it could be abused, we take a closer look at the app Affectiva and the facial recognition algorithm behind it.
