THE FUTURE IS HERE

The tiger rises : evolution of the modern chinese soldier (from 1900 to today)

A quick evolution of the Chinese soldier from the fall of the Qing Dynasty to the present day. This is arguably one of the most turbulent timelines I’ve covered so far. We are looking at a military history that spans the end of imperial rule, a brutal civil war, an invasion by Japan, and the eventual rise of a modern superpower. We start in 1900 with the Boxer Rebellion where you can see the traditional martial arts influence and the use of cold weapons like the Dao sword.

From there we move into the chaotic Warlord Era and the formation of the National Revolutionary Army. You will notice a massive shift in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War where the elite Chinese divisions were actually trained and equipped by Germany. That iconic “Stahlhelm” helmet on a Chinese soldier often surprises people who aren’t familiar with this specific period of cooperation. The evolution then shifts towards the Communist forces. We see the guerillas of 1944 and then the heavily padded winter uniforms used during the Civil War and the Korean War at the Chosin Reservoir.

The late 20th century shows the adoption of Soviet-influenced gear like the Type 56 rifle during the conflicts with India and Vietnam. Finally we reach the modern era. The visual jump from 1999 to 2024 is staggering. The modern PLA soldier is equipped with the new QBZ-191 service rifle, high-cut helmets, and digital “Starry Sky” camouflage. It is fascinating to visualize how the Chinese soldier went from fighting with spears and spirits in 1900 to wielding advanced digital optics and tactical body armor today.

I used Donnie Yen as the base for the actor because he perfectly embodies the martial spirit of the early segments. He has played Ip Man and various other roles set in this exact tumultuous period of Chinese history so his face lends a lot of gravity to the visual evolution.

Music Choice: The song used is “Soldiers should be on the battlefield” (Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang). I spent a while thinking about this one. I could have gone with “The March of the Volunteers” (the national anthem), but that felt a bit too political and official. I also considered “The East is Red”, but that is too specifically tied to the Cultural Revolution era and doesn’t fit the 1900s or the 2020s. I settled on this track (famous from the Once Upon a Time in China movies) because it captures the rhythm of a military march while keeping that traditional Chinese percussion which ties the whole century together.

How this was made: I use AI to help visualize military history concepts, while trying to remain as accurate as possible. Images were made with Google Nano Banana Pro after an in depth researched prompt on my side first. I then animate them with Kling 2.5 using Start/end frames for great visual results and good authenticity. I tried to get all the weapon/uniform details (like the German helmets in 1937 and the chest rigs in 1979) as accurately portrayed as possible but there are always some creative liberties wherever things are less clear cut or where the AI struggles with specific camo patterns.

I’m passionate and research every video but I can definitely make mistakes so feel free to point them out ! I’m here to learn as well. Let me know if you find any glaring mistakes particularly with the transition from the Type 81 to the modern QBZ rifles.
