▬ The evolution of Artificial Intelligence – History ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The idea of human created objects coming to life was with us for a very long time. Already the ancient Greeks, for instance, had myths about robots. But we had to wait for a very long time for actual artificial intelligence to rise. Actually, in 1956 at the Dartmouth College conference, the very term AI was coined. In the 70s, the first artificial intelligence winter came, it was a period of decreased and almost frozen funding and lack of progress after that. A decade later, another winter came. In the 80s, artificial intelligence as a nascent field was hit again. But in 1997, this very famous computer programme called Deep Blue managed to win with Garry Kasparov in the game of chess. A decade later, in 2011, IBM, Watson outplayed 2 humans at the Jeopardy game. And that marked a new era. Currently, with big amounts of data, huge computational powers and new methods of data processing, we’re finally at the time when artificial intelligence is becoming a general purpose technology, and that’s just the beginning

▬ The future of AI ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
After more than seven decades marked by hoopla and sporadic dormancy, we have moved to algorithm based machine learning and we are increasingly focused on perception, reasoning and generalisation. AI. is here to stay. There’s virtually no major industry that would not use artificial intelligence or would not be affected by it, from transportation and logistics to health care, education and retail, AI together with Edge Computing IoT will continue to transform the way goods and services are produced, distributed and consumed.

▬ AI in the European Union ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The European Commission is ensuring that AI is human centric and consistent with our values as well as beneficial to our society. People should feel they can trust AI and that AI poses no harm to their fundamental rights. AI needs to be secure, transparent and non-biased. It cannot discriminate against anyone. To the contrary, it should increase the level of fairness in decision making.

▬ About Digital EU ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) develops and implements policies to make Europe fit for the digital age.

We invest in research, innovation, deployment and uptake of trustworthy and green digital technologies that improve our economy and people’s lives.

Through funding, legislation and policy initiatives, we help ensure European leadership and independence in critical digital technologies(such as Artificial Intelligence, Common Data Spaces, high-performance computing, 5G, micro-electronics, blockchain and quantum).

We work towards making Europe a global leader in the data economy and in cybersecurity. We foster the internal market where all companies can invest and compete on equal terms, develop, market and use digital technologies, products and services and where the rights of creators and consumers are respected. We work on the deployment of very high-speed networks to all companies and households, as connectivity is key for digital transformation. We promote the EU’s human-centric model of an innovative, fair and sustainable digital transformation of society, which respects our democratic values, our fundamental rights and cultural diversity. We help bridge the digital divide by supporting digital literacy and skills of EU citizens.
