The Ethics of Emotion in Artificial Intelligence Systems

AI systems that analyze human emotions are called Artificial Emotional Intelligence (AEI), and their ethical implications have attracted considerable attention. Most of today’s AI technologies such as facial recognition systems, digital phenotyping, and sentiment analysis are grounded on the Basic Emotion Theory. In his work, Luke challenged the use of this theory and argued that the lack of consensus on how to model emotions raises the question of whether it is ever ethically appropriate to develop and deploy Artificial Emotional Intelligence (AEI) for public consumption.
