On #JLFBraveNewWorld Toby Walsh, one of the world’s leading researchers in Artificial Intelligence, and Jaspreet Bindra, author of ‘Tech Whisperer’ and the founder of Digital Matters, discuss the future of AI.
The future of medicine and diagnostics lies in artificial intelligence and machine learning. According to the Future Healthcare Journal, AI will be increasingly applied within the healthcare field, especially for the tasks of diagnosis and treatment recommendations, patient engagement, and administrative activities of the healthcare workforce. What does this mean for the future? Our diverse panel answers some key questions on Be Inspired, Toby Walsh is a Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of AI at the University of New South Wales and Data61, and adjunct professor at QUT. He was named by an Australian newspaper as one of the “rock stars” of Australia’s digital revolution. Professor Walsh is a strong advocate for limits to ensure AI is used to improve our lives. He has been a leading voice in the discussion about autonomous weapons (aka “killer robots”), speaking at the UN in New York and Geneva on the topic. He is a Fellow of the Australia Academy of Science. He appears regularly on TV and radio, and has authored two books on AI for a general audience, the most recent entitled “2062: The World that AI Made”. Today, we’re chatting with AI expert, activist, and author Toby Walsh. Toby is a leading researcher in Artificial Intelligence. Dubbed a “rock star” of Australia’s digital revolution by The Australian newspaper, Toby certainly has the backing of a long list of credentials to warrant the title. He is Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW, leads the Algorithmic Decision Theory group at Data61, Australia’s Centre of Excellence for ICT Research, and is Guest Professor at TU Berlin. He has been elected a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and has won the prestigious Humboldt research award as well as the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellence in Engineering and ICT. He has previously held research positions in England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Sweden. During the discussion, Toby opens with his thoughts on the future of AI, when and how it could surpass humans, and how little we know about how it could impact our jobs. He also discusses with us other ways AI can impact society for better or for worse. How can our data privacy impact AI and how can microtargeting using this data change the course of history? What ethics should we stand by? Who is responsible for decisions made by autonomous machines? And could government regulation actually help—rather than hinder—innovation? – Insight into Toby’s most recent book, “2062: The World That AI Made”, touted as the book to read, bar none, on AI and society. – Will AI have consciousness? Is consciousness a biological construct? [More]

Abstract: How do we allocate scarce sources? How do we fairly allocate costs? These are two pressing challenges facing society today. I discuss three recent projects concerning resource and cost allocation. In the first, we have been working with FoodBank Local, a social startup working in collaboration with food bank charities around the world to optimise the logistics of collecting and distributing donated food. Before we can distribute this food, we must decide how to allocate it to different charities and food kitchens. This gives rise to a fair division problem with several new dimensions, rarely considered in the literature. In the second, we consider how donated kidneys are allocated to waiting patients in Australia and New Zealand. Again, this gives rise to a fair division problem with a number of dimensions rarely considered in the academic literature. In the third, we have been looking at cost allocation within the distribution network of a large multinational company. This also has several new dimensions rarely considered in the literature.
