Book review for Architects of Intelligence: The truth about AI from the people building it by: Martin Ford
Presentation by Catherine Henry (2017 Clearwater DevCon). When teaching a subject through text it can be beneficial to evaluate the reader’s understanding; however, the creation of relevant questions and answers can be time-consuming and tedious. I will walk through how the implementation of NLP libraries and algorithms can assist in, and potentially remove altogether, the current necessity of an individual manually formulating these tests.
For nearly half a century, artificial intelligence always seemed as if it just beyond reach, rarely more, and rarely less, than two decades away. Between Watson, Deep Blue, and Siri, there can be little doubt that progress in AI has been immense, yet “strong AI” in some ways still seems elusive. In this talk, I will give a cognitive scientist’s perspective on AI. What have we learned, and what are we still struggling with? Is there anything that programmers of AI can still learn from studying the science of human cognition?

On the evening of 29th November 2018, the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI) hosted an expert panel on ‘The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Views from History’ featuring: Prof. Simon Schaffer (University of Cambridge) Prof. Murray Shanahan (DeepMind, Imperial) Prof. Margaret A. Boden OBE ScD FBA, (University of Sussex) Prof. Nathan Ensmenger (Indiana University) Pamela McCorduck (author of Machines Who Think, an authoritative history of AI) and chaired by Dr Sarah Dillon (Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence). Speakers interrogated the past, present, and future of intelligent systems for a general audience, with an interest towards the nuanced power dynamics that have operated around such systems throughout the ages. This event commemorated the 60th anniversary of the landmark 1958 ‘Mechanisation of Thought Conference’ held in Teddington, England; an event that served to establish artificial intelligence as a standalone field in the UK. This public lecture led into a private symposium on 30th November 2018 involving world class historians of technology from around the globe.
QUANTUM SYNAPSE. Joscha Bach: Artificial Consciousness and the Nature of Reality | AI Podcast #101 with Lex Fridman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-2P3MSZrBM Dr. Joscha Bach (MIT Media Lab and the Harvard Program for Evolutionary Dynamics) is an AI researcher who works and writes about cognitive architectures, mental representation, emotion, social modeling, and multi-agent systems. He is the founder of the MicroPsi project, in which virtual agents are constructed and used in a computer model to discover and describe the interactions of emotion, motivation, and cognition of situated agents. Bach’s mission to build a model of the mind is the bedrock research in the creation of Strong AI, i.e. cognition on par with that of a human being.
