Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Thyroid Disease w/ Dr. O'Keeffe
We are grateful to have guest lecturer, Dr. Derek O'Keeffe present "RAI (Responsible Artificial Intelligence) in Thyroid Disease." After the lecture, Dr. Guillermo Elizondo-Riojas joins the discussion, along with host Dr. Camilo Gonzalez-Velazquez.

9:00 Dr. O’Keeffe Introduces Big Data
There is a lot of big data in the medical field, but the real question is how all this patient information in the form of raw data becomes clinically relevant. The key is to turn raw data into information, knowledge, and finally wisdom. That’s where we get the most meaningful use from our data. We are reaching the digital Cambrian explosion where we have incredible amounts of raw data but also the processing power to support that data. AI is first introduced in the 1950s but is only coming to fruition now because of advancements in software & technology.
21:00 Dr. O’Keeffe Discusses AI in Thyroid Disease
It’s an exciting time to be in thyroid research because big data & AI are emerging from thyroid disease. For example, thyroid function data tells us thyroxine, T3, & TSH levels in the blood over time in a certain patient. The data available right now is not very good at indicating what these trends mean, but with more data points, it may be possible to determine what their disease may look like in 6 months and a year by identifying trends through AI. Thyroid structure data from ultrasound videos can also be fed into deep machine-learning neural networks to improve the detection of prognostic indicators.
41:00 Dr. Elizondo Discusses AI Integration in Radiology
AI & machine learning in the FDA are handled like a medical device. The guidelines for responsible AI are published back in 2022, and since then, 87% of the AI devices that are being approved by the FDA are relevant to radiology. Dr. Elizondo emphasizes that continuous training & education in AI are essential for radiologists for better ethical practice and integration into clinical workflow.
