In this interview, I ask Fast.AI researcher Rachel Thomas 67 questions about machine learning and her day to day life. She was selected by Forbes as one of “20 Incredible Women in AI”, was an early engineer at Uber, and earned her math PhD at Duke. She is co-founder of, which created the “Practical Deep Learning for Coders” course that over 100,000 students have taken. Rachel is a popular writer and keynote speaker. Her writing has been read by over half a million people; has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Korean, & Portuguese; and has made the front page of Hacker News 8x.

Olee _ says:

really Rachel its because of toxicity that no girls join these fields ? Come on you're smarter than that.

Naman Madan says:

Hi Siraj,
Love these Quick Questions videos. Not sure what it meant by "there is some toxicity in the field and a lot of related fields of maths and computer science". Could you help?

joshua chieng says:

Hi, I am Malaysian! We welcome you!

CISMD says:

"What do you do to relax" @1:38 and @3:11, repeated question

Gustavo Martinez says:

Thank you for the motivation!!!! Do you have some idea the thing that you are doing? The motivation in education is the corner stone. Great job Siraj.

Lou Springer says:

Limit to 42 questions.

Rakesh Mallick says:

Dear Sirajbhai, you can simply sit down and ask the questions patiently. The audio when you are asking the questions is inconsistent.

pedro martins says:

Ei Siraj,is it important to get degree?

Arjun says:

Most of the people in ML field agrees that no PhD require to research the topic, because the Internet is an effective university than a traditional system.

Kannan N says:

Where is the github link for above demo 😀

Andrei Spiridonov says:

Thank you, Siraj

I can say for sure, she has a leftist mindset. The political situation? you have one of the best president ever. Yeah I know every leftist hates Trump. The best thing she has said, is that random forest don't get enough attention.

LOL my "first" program was a "Wall" message board with GBBS in GWBASIC!

Nisarg Jain says:

Very akward interview

Raven Tan says:

Any Malaysian here? Show her our hospitality! 🤗🎉🎊

She herself is a little bit toxic. Variance of phenotypic traits is usually greater among males (this idea was proposed by Darwin himself). This is also the case for humans and IQ. SD for IQ is 15.5 for adult males in USA and 14.5 for females. This results in quite considerable differences in the right-side tails:
Of course the same logic applies to the left-side tails:
That's why there are many more males than females living below poverty lines (just look at the homeless people, they are almost all males).

Oh, and it's important to know that individual variances of phenotypic traits decrease with age, and it's caused by activation of genes during adolescence – it's easy to see especially among whites: many white children with blond hair won't have blond hair as adults but not vice versa (most dark-haired children will have dark hair as adults), many white children with blue eyes won't have blue eyes as adults but not vice versa etc. That's why it's hard to distinguish sex of clothed 1 month babies but it's usually quite easy to distinguish sex of adult people. And brain cortex (especially in the frontal lobe) maturates (this process is slower for boys) till age of 25. So for adults there is an addition gap in IQ mean of 2-3 points (Lynn, R., & Irwing, P. 2004). This effect alone would produce 2:1 male:female ratio in adults with IQ>130 !

She ignores basic empirical studies and/or she ignores basic properties of THE MOST BASIC distribution (i.e. normal) in all of statistics. She's an ideologue.

The "best" studies used by feminists could convince only brain-dead ideologues who don't know anything about statistics. Read popular papers like Kane & Mertz (2012). This is a joke. They present data that clearly shows that Darwin's predictions apply to mathematics performance, hoping that feminist readers know nothing about concept like sampling distributions and outliers. Just look at their table 2 where they show 126 ratios that clearly show that Darwin was right in this case, but they look only at outliers of 7 data points and they claim this is a proof for their null-hypothesis of no differences (sic!). Like I said, anyone who knows what a sampling distribution is would laugh or cry over such utterly stupid papers. This is a typical example of feminist anti-science.
