THE FUTURE IS HERE

Provost's Lecture Series — Hypersonic: Why Faster Isn't Just Faster by Dr. Garth Hobson

The NPS Provost’s Lecture Series presents “Hypersonics: Why Faster Isn’t Just Faster, but a Game Changer” with Dr. Garth Hobson, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering on May 23, 2023 on the NPS campus.

Hypersonic typically refers to speeds that are at least five times the speed of sound, or Mach 5 and above. Hypersonic speeds are often associated with advanced aerospace technologies and can have applications in areas such as high-speed transportation, space exploration, and military defense systems. Hypersonic flight provides an unprecedented capability by simultaneously extending range and reducing transit time, enabling rapid reach and global targeting.

Dr. Hobson’s presentation focuses on the challenges associated with air-breathing hypersonic vehicles. A short history of hypersonic flight is presented followed by an introduction to NPS’ research in support of the Office of Naval Research.
