THE FUTURE IS HERE

Predictive-Based Safety – How AI is Changing Construction Risk Management

Presented at Calgary Virtual Session 2020 – The Future of Work: Designing Resiliency and Building Safety Post-COVID on June 16, 2020

Presented by
— Tim Gattie, VP of Industry Strategy, Smartvid.io

Summary
Incident rates in the construction industry have remained stagnant for years. The industry also bears a disproportionate share of workplace fatalities of any industry. It’s clear that a new approach to managing safety is required. From fraud prevention to data security to customized searches and movie recommendations, AI is transforming our daily lives. AI is also bringing staggering change to the way other industries execute – going beyond digitization of traditional processes to digital transformation, or the creation of entirely new and more efficient ways of doing business. Predictive-Based Safety (PBS) is at the intersection of incident and injury prevention and AI, it’s the beach head that AI is building in the construction industry. Forward thinking contractors who have been gathering consistent safety data are starting to use AI to build models aimed at helping them identify incidents before they transpire. Moreover, their models provide guidance on what they can do to prevent them. This session will present a background on how AI has transformed various industries and then present specific case studies of its use in construction and capital projects for safety.   Learning Objectives: What Predictive-Based Safety (PBS) is and how it differs from traditional safety programs The types of AI models and metrics that drive PBS Benefits of deploying a PBS program Steps you can take to deploy PBS
