THE FUTURE IS HERE

Neuroscience, AI and the Future of AI – a workshop for the European Commission

This is footage from a workshop I ran for the European Commission (July, 2018, Brussels) on Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, and the future of education.

I do believe that there is no doubt that AI will play a powerful role in helping transform and better personalise education, through generative algorithms that can present the right information at the right time for optimal pleasure and learning. However, used inappropriately, this leads to individual learning journeys, and a disconnection with peer learning.

In contrast, we need to bear in mind that true human flourishing is all about connection. Happiness and flourishing stems from connection with others (e.g., empathy, compassion, personal close relationships, and working well with others), and connection with our own emotions, values and sense of purpose. Emotional Intelligence has twice the impact on workplace performance as IQ – as it is as a team that we achieve more than we can alone.

In short, I would not like to see AI replace teachers, but rather be used as a tool for helping teach the fundamentals, freeing up class time, for more meaningful and enjoyable group-based projects, where children can also learn about, practice and refine the “soft skills” that essential to our humanity, well-being and success.
