In July 2025, Neuralink announced its participation in a clinical study led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, aimed at developing a Smart Bionic Eye—an AI-powered visual prosthesis. Termed Blindsight, the technology seeks to help blind individuals recognize faces, navigate environments, and read by directly stimulating the visual cortex. Neuralink’s role will involve incorporating its patients “once available” into the trial, with human implants expected by late 2025. The company has previously received FDA Breakthrough Device status for Blindsight.
