How Venture Capitalists Evaluate AI Startups

How do venture capitalists evaluate AI startups? As artificial intelligence permeates every aspect of our lives, more and more startups are emerging to address the needs of different industries and build AI tools for a variety of applications.

Pavel Kireyev, INSEAD Assistant Professor of Marketing, sat down with Nick Slater from AI Seed, a London-based AI venture capital firm, to investigate which criteria they view as important in deciding whether or not to invest in seed-stage AI startups. Subjects discussed include the scope of what counts as AI or “deep tech”and what doesn’t from a VC’s perspective, the difference between investing in “research-oriented” versus “applications-oriented startups,” and how VCs perform technical due diligence on new and emerging AI technologies.
