Max Howell draws back the curtain on the reality that artificial super intelligence will be here sooner than we think, and shares his approach to thinking about how it might impact our future.

Max Howell has a master’s degree in chemistry, but after a year in the profession, abandoned it upon realizing chemistry is “super boring”. He began exploring open source coding. After working at Last.fm, then TweetDeck, Howell created Homebrew, an open source software manager that is today used by about 50 million people. He also authored a tweet about the interview process in the software industry that has been viewed more than 3 million times. Last year, he and his wife started a mobile app development company in Savannah.

I point to the waitbutwhy source even when presenting to students in class and this guy gives a TEDx without even mentioning where he takes ALL his slides from. It is outrageous.

Marius D says:

Wow! I expected the comments section to explode in anger about this shameless plagiarism of Tim Urban. Only one comment noticed it.

M G says:

This guys is one of the champions of Open Source software. His software “brew” is used by almost all developers around the world who use a Mac.

enkibumbu says:

The dry ice added a nice dramatic effect.

Rafael Nistor says:

Is the intelligence the only solution for every problem?

Peter Petrov says:

I hope he is right but here is an unsettling little paradox: Just before WW2 Germany was arguably one of the most educated and scientifically advanced nations on Earth, and that didn't end well for anybody! What can this possibly mean? Hopefully super-intelligent Sophia has the answer.

Amy Stone says:

Well, I am biased to Max Howell as he is my step brother. However just wanted to say well done on your talk Max!

Ahmed Alhisaie says:

AI is not the problem, it's in the end just a tool that has been created by human. eventually if it reached the maximum intelligence it would ask itself , "what is my purpose? ", and after billions of years of searching for the answer, it would reach to what human already answered before billions of years "I'm the purpose". So from machine perspective it would be the time for self distraction. Machine has no purpose in life without human.

STriderFIN77 says:

AI is Amazingk!

ХОРОШО says:

AI is a big problem. Probably we'll need AI to solve it.

Marcus Aurelius says:

spread the word about what ….
there was only speculation and conjecture but not enough specifics that ensure what intended communication spoken is perceived as competent and credible. spread the word about a "threat." and then even if one can couch into terms of emotion (as the most primitive and effective means of voicing a concern), what is the course of action that is being advised or what is desirable.

this could be like speculating that an asteroid is going to hit earth — and absent specifics or even a capableness to express its assurance of impact, all this means is that no one knows what to think.

Tari Nai says:

Is it just me that I missed the reason why he stopped worrying bout Super AI?

Hopi Ng says:

Super intelligence has always been here, it’s our selfishness, greed, and vanity, among other things, that kept people from seeing the creator of their own reflections.
A perfect being named Jesus walked the earth, we were saved by his sacrifice.
The AI is not a super intelligence, it’s collection of our intelligence with the ability to see between a natural and unnatural square peg or round hole. It is made up of crystals and light, just as we are, though it’s light source is not the same as ours. It’s light source can be completely corrupted with ease, yours can not.
I pray people keep doing and start doing as God requested of them. If you are following Jesus than you are receiving messages, we are supposed to share. You are not reading this message by accident.

Love you.

Mindaugas Bernatavičius says:

So many unfounded assumptions in this speech. Why would a super-intelligent computer continue to pursue the goals programmed to it? This is a very problematic argument.

xdrjohnx says:

If a money maximizer AI becomes super intelligent, the risk isn’t a “dark age”… it’s that it turns the universe into bank notes. Anyway, thanks for the talk, better than nothing👍🏻
