Tech Panel: Autonomous systems that integrate advanced perception with sophisticated reasoning offer great promise for national defense, enhancing security and peacetime operations. A growing number of robotic vehicles are able to operate in hazardous settings leading to systems that are increasingly able to detect and respond to threats faster than human operators. Advanced decision-making systems may be faced with life-or-death decisions, outside of weapon systems applications. The legal and ethical implications of using such technologies in national defense settings are a growing concern for all parties. This panel will provide a medium for discussion and education on the ethical implications of intelligent autonomy in military applications.
