THE FUTURE IS HERE

Brain-computer interface research and development at OHSU

Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is among the most challenging of diagnoses for neurologists, patients and families. An OHSU research team, led by Melanie Fried-Oken, Ph.D., C.C.C.-S.L.P., is developing a new brain-computer interface (BCI) for patients who are cognitively intact but without motor skills to communicate, through a unique combination of technologies and expertise. One of her team’s consultants is Greg Bieker, who has locked-in syndrome as a result of a brain stem stroke. Watch Greg use the BCI technology under development at OHSU.
