A mind controlled masterpiece: James Johnson creates art in Photoshop with BCI
James Johnson is one of only a handful of people in the world with an implantable brain-computer interface (BCI)—a brain implant that enables him to control a computer hands-free, using the power of his thoughts, alone.
Thanks to extensive research at CalTech, and using an implant developed by Blackrock Neurotech, James has used BCI technology to create an extensive portfolio of digital art, now on display at the first-ever thought-generated art gallery: The BCI Exhibit.
The BCI Exhibit at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington D.C. is the first gallery of its kind, featuring digital art creations by several “BCI Pioneers,” patients with paralysis who have received a Blackrock implant.
Using Blackrock's cutting-edge technology, James and the other featured artists have composed visually striking digital art solely through the power of thought. These BCI-created artworks redefine the limits of human creativity and innovation, demonstrating what is possible when we harness the power of this transformative technology.
In addition to the artwork of the Pioneers, the educational exhibit will walk visitors through the rich history of neurotechnology, as well as showcase extraordinary lab research and displays of current and future brain implants, including the devices used by the artists.
The exhibit is on display April 14 - November 15, 2023.
