THE FUTURE IS HERE

A Brief History of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs)

Welcome to Neuroscience TV, where we explore how the brain and mind are depicted on the big (and small) screen, and relate it to some fascinating science happening behind the scenes.

In this episode, we’ll check out the increasingly popular science fiction trope of merging mind with machine, as seen in countless movies and TV shows.

Brain computer interfaces (BCIs), which allow the brain and computers to directly communicate, have captivated our imaginations for decades. From Star Trek to The Matrix and Black Mirror, these movies and TV shows explore both our hopes and fears for the future of BCI technology. The popularity of BCIs in sci-fi has even spawned a whole new subgenre, known as bci-fi (brain computer interface fiction).

But did you know that the very first mention of a BCI in science fiction goes back all the way to 1879? That’s right, even the Victorians were interested in augmenting our minds with machines, albeit with a bit more steampunk aesthetic than the cyberpunk one we see now. Fast forward to modern times, and BCI research has made incredible advancements, making what seemed like utter science fiction nonsense only a few decades ago a reality today.

Join me for a deep dive into both the history of BCI research and iconic BCI moments in movies and TV shows.
