Can Neuralink Tech Cure Blindness?
In this podcast with Shobha Rana, Dr. Rahil Chaudhary discusses one of the most fascinating and futuristic questions in ophthalmology today: Can blindness actually be reversed with emerging technologies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink?
Dr. Rahil explains that vision works through a highly coordinated system. Light enters the eye, passes through the pupil and lens, and lands on the retina. From here, electrical impulses are carried to the brain by the optic nerve, finally reaching the visual cortex, which interprets these signals as sight. When conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa or optic atrophy damage this pathway, conventional medicine often cannot restore vision.
This is where Neuralink comes in. The concept involves implanting micro-electrodes directly into the brain’s visual cortex. These electrodes can bypass damaged eyes and nerves by receiving signals from a special camera embedded in smart goggles. The camera captures real-time images, translates them into electrical impulses, and sends them straight to the brain.
Essentially, even if the eyes themselves no longer function, the brain can still “see” because the input is being supplied artificially. It is like plugging a new camera directly into the brain’s visual center. Early FDA-approved trials have already begun in the United States, and while the technology is still evolving, experts believe it could be the next revolution in ophthalmology after LASIK — offering hope to millions of blind patients worldwide.
