THE FUTURE IS HERE

Why Taiwan Is Hit by 6x More Cyberattacks Than the U.S. | #NowYouKnow

Cyberattacks from China are a massive issue for Taiwan’s government, which faces six times as many daily cyberattacks as the U.S. federal government. On the day of Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in early August of 2022, several Taiwan government agency websites were suddenly inundated with traffic. The incident was later identified as a series of DDoS attacks, a common, primitive type of cyberattack where malicious actors flood a website with traffic, rendering it temporarily unavailable. Many suspected China and the CCP of initiating the cyberattacks. Just weeks after Pelosi’s visit, Taiwan formed its digital affairs ministry, which serves as the government’s IT department, protecting it from attacks. In this episode, we invited Deputy Minister of Digital Affairs Herming Chiueh to share how the ministry combats cybercrime and safeguards Taiwan’s national interests.

Chiueh draws on his extensive background in cybersecurity, communications, and IT systems to respond to claims and questions from the internet about Taiwan’s cybersecurity resilience. For example, how does the government determine who is behind a cyberattack? How do hackers behave, and what does their behavior indicate about their motivations? Did China really cut Taiwan’s undersea internet cables? If so, what can Taiwan do about this threat to its critical infrastructure? Herming Chiueh answers these questions and more in this episode of “Now You Know.”

⚡More about Herming Chiueh:
– Deputy Minister of Taiwan’s Digital Affairs Ministry
– Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California
– Chief Talents and Information Officer at Asia Silicon Valley Development Agency, National Development Council
