Today Bill Gates gave an interview to Bloomberg and among other things talked about Tesla CEO Elon Musk saying he built great electric cars with quality and compared him to Steve Jobs per reporter’s request.

It was only three days ago that Elon Musk answering a Tweeter question about Bill Gate’s blog – in which he talked about electric cars without mentioning Tesla and suggested that Tesla Semi will not work (again without mentioning it by name) said, “He has no clue.” Now Bill Gates talked about Elon Musk and spoke more gracefully. It’s laudable and credible.

“The fact that Elon Musk and others did a great electric car is a huge contribution to the climate change effort. He did it with quality. It’s still a little premium-priced, but he’s got that initial market, and that market’s going to grow, and other car companies, seeing his success, will come in. The question of what’s the profit per car and what’s the market share of Tesla, that’s for stock people. That’s not a climate change issue at all. The difficulty on the other areas is much higher. I’m not trivializing in any way the need to raise the market share of EVs, but on a relative basis, that’s far easier than the industrial economy, where our progress is very small. We are grossly underinvested in these hard areas,” Gates said to Erik Schatzker for Bloomberg Green.

Bloomberg’s reporter also asked if Elon Musk is the new Steve Jobs. To that question, Bill Gates answered in the following manner.

“If you know people personally, that kind of gross oversimplification seems strange. Elon’s more of a hands-on engineer. Steve was a genius at design and picking people and marketing. You wouldn’t walk into a room and confuse them with each other.”

That was the part about Elon Musk in the entire interview. As you can see Gates didn’t refer anything to Elon’s previous tweet and he did it right.

But before this section of the interview Gates talked about energy and electric vehicles, about which I talk extensively in this report.

MIT Cosmologist Max Tegmark explains that gravity “slows down” time. Max shows that time is relative even out in the cosmos at a monster black hole.

Known as “Mad Max” for his unorthodox ideas and passion for adventure, Max Tegmark’s scientific interests range from precision cosmology to the ultimate nature of reality. He is author or coauthor of more than two hundred technical papers, twelve of which have been cited more than five hundred times. He has been featured in dozens of science documentaries, and his work with the SDSS collaboration on galaxy clustering shared the first prize in Science magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year: 2003.” He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a physics professor at MIT.

AI investor Henry Shi addressed the following questions:

Henry Shi is an investor, entrepreneur, and technologist. He is the Managing Partner of AI List Capital and a Venture Partner with BOLD Capital Partners. Henry is an early investor in over 20 AI-driven startups, three of which are at or approaching unicorn status. His portfolio companies have attracted follow-up investments from Sequoia, GV, Accel, KPCB, SoftBank, Tencent, and many others. Previously, Henry was a Venture Partner with Zuma Ventures, a studio-style incubator for emerging tech companies. As a serial entrepreneur, Henry cofounded PlusYoou, one of the largest startup platforms in Southern California that connects local startups with strategic partners and venture capital from Asia. Henry has also cofounded CloudApply (acquired), the first online marketplace in China that provides on-demand education consulting. Henry is a Computer Science PhD from University of Southern California and a Visiting Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University.

John Searle is the Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His Talk at Google is focused on the philosophy of mind and the potential for consciousness in artificial intelligence. This Talk was hosted for Google’s Singularity Network.

John is widely noted for his contributions to the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and social philosophy. Searle has received the Jean Nicod Prize, the National Humanities Medal, and the Mind & Brain Prize for his work. Among his notable concepts is the “Chinese room” argument against “strong” artificial intelligence.

Max Tegmark is a renowned scientific communicator and cosmologist, and has accepted donations from Elon Musk to investigate the existential risk from advanced artificial intelligence. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2012, won Science Magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year” in 2003, and has over 200 publications, nine of which have been cited more than 500 times. He is also scientific director of the Foundational Questions Institute, wrote the bestseller Our Mathematical Universe, and is a Professor of Physics at MIT.

Back in 2015, Professor Pedram Mohseni and Rudolph J. Nudo created a startup called ‘NeuraLink’. The pair of neurotech researchers had developed a device that could potentially help people suffering from brain injuries. Investors didn’t show a great deal of interest, but in 2016 Elon Musk offered to purchase the rights to the name, Neuralink.

Fast forward to the 27th of March 2017 and Musk announced that he will be backing a new brain-computer interface venture, Neuralink. The ultimate goal of this new company is to merge man with machine, fusing human intelligence with artificial intelligence to bring humanity up to a higher level of cognitive reasoning. Without this technology, Musk argues that humans will be unable to keep pace with advances in artificial intelligence.

So far, Musk has been calling this brain-computer interface technology ‘neural lace’. In essence, neural lace is an ultra-thin mesh that is implanted in the skull, and forms a body of electrodes which are able to monitor brain function.

Max Tegmark visited Google’s Cambridge, MA office to discuss his book, “Our Mathematical Universe: My Quest for the Ultimate Nature of Reality”. The book describes his quest to explore the ultimate nature of reality, from the microcosm to our universe and beyond.

Dr. Tegmark is an MIT physics professor who loves thinking about life’s big questions. He is author or coauthor of more than two hundred technical papers, and his work with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey collaboration on galaxy clustering shared the first prize in Science magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year 2003”.

We were joined in London by Sir Dermot Turing who talked about his uncle, Alan Turing, and his new book Prof: Alan Turing Decoded.

About the book:
Alan Turing was an extraordinary man who crammed into a life of only 42 years the careers of mathematician, codebreaker, computer scientist and biologist. He is widely regarded as a war hero grossly mistreated by his unappreciative country and it has become hard to disentangle the real man from the story. It is easy to cast him as a misfit, the stereotypical professor. But actually Alan Turing was never a professor, and his nickname ‘Prof’ was given by his codebreaking friends at Bletchley Park.

Now, Alan Turing’s nephew, Dermot Turing, has taken a fresh look at the influences on Alan Turing’s life and creativity, and the later creation of a legend. For the first time it is possible to disclose the real character behind the cipher-text: how did Alan’s childhood experiences influence the man? Who were the influential figures in Alan’s formative years? How did his creative ideas evolve? Was he really a solitary, asocial genius? What was his wartime work after 1942, and why was it kept even more secret than the Enigma story? What is the truth about Alan Turing’s conviction for gross indecency, and did he commit suicide? What is the significance of the Royal Pardon granted in 2013?

About the author:
Dermot Turing was educated at Sherborne and King’s College, Cambridge. After completing his DPhil in Genetics at New College, Oxford, Dermot moved into the legal profession working first for HM Treasury Solicitor’s Department and then for Clifford Chance where he has remained (as a partner since 1999.) Dermot is currently based in London in Clifford Chance’s Financial Services and Markets Group and his professional focus is on regulation, insolvency and risk management for financial institutions.

Dermot is the nephew of Alan Turing (1912-1954), who is well known to have been one of Bletchley Park’s leading cryptanalysts as well as a founder of the science of artificial intelligence. Naturally enough, Dermot has followed closely the gradual revelation of the achievements of the Bletchley codebreakers from the first release of materials in 1975 and the re-opening of Bletchley Park to the public in the early 1990s. He feels it is a privilege and a pleasure to provide a more direct contribution as a Trustee.

The idea of artificial intelligence–job-killing robots, self-driving cars, and self-managing organizations–captures the imagination, evoking a combination of wonder and dread for those of us who will have to deal with the consequences. But what if it’s not quite so complicated? The real job of artificial intelligence, argue these three eminent economists, is to lower the cost of prediction. And once you start talking about costs, you can use some well‐established economics to cut through the hype.

The constant challenge for all managers is to make decisions under uncertainty. And AI contributes by making knowing what’s coming in the future cheaper and more certain. But decision making has another component: judgment, which is firmly in the realm of humans, not machines. Making prediction cheaper means that we can make more predictions more accurately and assess them with our better (human) judgment. Once managers can separate tasks into components of prediction and judgment, we can begin to understand how to optimize the interface between humans and machines.

Molly Wright Steenson is the K&L Gates Associate Professor of Ethics & Computational Technologies at Carnegie Mellon University & Senior Associate Dean for Research in the College of Fine Arts. A designer, writer, and international speaker, she is the author of Architectural Intelligence: How Designers and Architects Created the Digital Landscape (MIT Press, 2017), which traces the radical history of AI’s impact on design and architecture, and the co-editor of the forthcoming book Bauhaus Futures (MIT Press, 2019). Molly cut her teeth on the Web in 1994 and has worked at groundbreaking design studios, consultancies, and Fortune 500 companies. She holds a PhD in Architecture from Princeton University and a master’s in architectural history from the Yale School of Architecture.

In this talk, Molly Wright Steenson explores the work of four architects in the 1960s and 1970s who incorporated elements of interactivity into their work. Christopher Alexander, Richard Saul Wurman, Cedric Price, and Nicholas Negroponte and the MIT Architecture Machine Group all incorporated technologies—including cybernetics and artificial intelligence—into their work and influenced digital design practices from the late 1980s to the present day.
