Artificial General Intelligence or short AGI was commonly referred as Strong AI. The continues advancements in robotics are also spurring the development of AGI. Currently we only have narrow AI or weak AI. But robots are paving the way for strong AI. In the future, robots might possibly become smarter than us or at least, reach human level intelligence. The field of robotics has seen many improvements over the years, as artificial intelligence systems continue to get better. Machine intelligence is a trendy topic among computer scientists and other relevant researchers on the field. As robots continue to get better, concerns for the rise of a superintelligence or an artificial general intelligence that could have different goals from ours, is increasingly getting the attention of computer scientists and lay people alike. We have often seen works of science fiction where robots and AGI have malicious intent. However, things could go really bad fur us even if initially these intelligent machines are programmed to obey human orders and follow our values. As a machine continues to improve itself by modifying it’s own source code, it could lead to an intelligence explosion. A point of time often referred as a technological singularity. Where it becomes hard if not impossible to predict future trajectories of the AI in question. As of the year 2017, there are over 40 organizations focused on the development of AGI. As we’ve said many times before, today’s AI is narrow. However the field of robotics is accelerating the rise of AGI and we will possibly witness a truly general AI in our lifetimes.

Science Documentary: Genetics, Robotics, Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence

There are several technologies emerging that will change what it means to be called a human being. Genetics is the manipulation of cells at their most basic levels. Along with genomics, the manipulation of proteins will give scientists the ability to create whatever they want.

In the pharmaceutical industry, one of the most exciting treatments to arise are memory pills. These should be available in the coming years to treat patients with alzheimer’s and eventually the general public. The possibilities include eventually being able to take a pill to help you learn another language, improve test taking, etc.

Another interesting promise of the future of genetics is the promise of various new vaccines to help quit smoking. Also, DARPA has developed an anti-sleep vaccine. This is a vaccine that simply shuts off the trigger that makes us fall asleep. Another human enhancement technology being developed by DARPA is a drug that triggers the body to burn fat cells.

The future of robotics involves the melding of human and machine attributes into what can be referred to as a cyborg. Intelligent machines are becoming more and more prevalent in military combat. And they are also becoming much more complex. Wearable robot suits that amplify your lifting capacity will be available in the not so distant future.

Consciousness and Neuroscience
One of the biggest mysteries in neuroscience is consciousness. Scientists have discovered a lot about the brain, but little progress has been made in understanding consciousness. It is as if the study of the brain and mind are separate. It is puzzling to scientists as to why we subjectively experience anything. If we understood every single brain cell and every single brain process, we still would not understand consciousness as a physical object within the brain. Any kind of theory of the brain, that is able to handle and support an understanding of subjective experience or neuro-rehabilitation or other such complex brain functions may revolutionize artificial intelligence and robotics.

AGI – Artificial General Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is currently being used to control animated characters in video games. Integrating Artificial intelligence into robotics has proved rather difficult. As humans, we use metaphors everyday in our speech to describe complex ideas. Trying to teach robots to be able to interpret and comprehend these metaphors could be a tough task. But as scientists progress in their integration of artificial intelligence and robotics, we may soon see more and more of our human senses replicated in a much more precise and sophisticated fashion.

Optical Quantum Computing
The future of medial treatment may involve the use of quantum computers. Patients will have a device like a cell phone that they carry with them which monitors their health and sends the information to their doctor who can then prescribe treatment to his patient. Understanding quantum physics has allowed researchers to develop this technology as well as other more and more complex quantum technologies.

Roboticist Andrea Thomaz gives us an under-the-hood peak at what is coming in the field of Robotics where robots will eventually be able to function and collaborate with humans as naturally as humans do with each other in social situations.

Andrea Thomaz knows robots. Her work developing robots that don’t need programming to perform every task and that can collaborate side by side with humans as assistants, domestic help, etc. has been recognized by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. Her work with social robots “Simon” and “Curi” has been featured in the New York Times and on NOVA Science Now.

In 2012, Thomaz was named to Popular Science Magazine’s “Brilliant 10” and she was named an “Innovator under 35” by MIT Technology Review in 2009. She is an Associate Professor of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Tech and director of the Socially Intelligent Machines lab. She earned a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, and Sc.M. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in 2002 and 2006. Thomaz has published in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Human-Robot Interaction.

Artificial intelligence today is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI), in that it is designed to perform a narrow task (e.g. only facial recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car). However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While narrow AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.

Rodney Brooks has a career as a controversial and distinguished researcher within artificial intelligence at Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University and MIT. In 2008 he left the academic world to launch his new company Rethink Robotics (formerly Heartland Robotics), now ranked as one of the most promising start-ups in the US. A new generation of robots is developed to improve productivity in manufacturing environments and for places that has not been automated before.

In this video, I reveal a couple of AI and robotics stocks that you may not even heard of yet. Everyone knows about the major players in the space (NVDA, GOOG, AMD, MSFT, etc), but I found a couple of stocks that are very interesting primarily in the robotics space. Brooks left MIT in 2008 to found a new company, Rethink Robotics (formerly Heartland Robotics), where he serves as chairman and Chief Technical Officer.
