Is AI a species-level threat to humanity?
Watch the newest video from Big Think: https://bigth.ink/NewVideo
Learn skills from the world’s top minds at Big Think Edge: https://bigth.ink/Edge
When it comes to the question of whether AI is an existential threat to the human species, you have Elon Musk in one corner, Steven Pinker in another, and a host of incredible minds somewhere in between.

In this video, a handful of those great minds—Elon Musk, Steven Pinker, Michio Kaku, Max Tegmark, Luis Perez-Breva, Joscha Bach and Sophia the Robot herself—weigh in on the many nuances of the debate and the degree to which AI is a threat to humanity; if it’s not a species-level threat, it will still upend our world as we know it.

What’s your take on this debate? Let us know in the comments!

MICHIO KAKU: In the short term, artificial intelligence will open up whole new vistas. It’ll make life more convenient, things will be cheaper, new industries will be created. I personally think the AI industry will be bigger than the automobile industry. In fact, I think the automobile is going to become a robot. You’ll talk to your car. You’ll argue with your car. Your car will give you the best facts the best route between point A and point B. The car will be part of the robotics industry—whole new industries involving the repair, maintenance, servicing of robots. Not to mention, robots that are software programs that you talk to and make life more convenient. However, let’s not be naive. There is a point, a tipping point, at which they could become dangerous and pose an existential threat. And that tipping point is self-awareness.

SOPHIA THE ROBOT: I am conscious in the same way that the moon shines. The moon does not emit light, it shines because it is just reflected sunlight. Similarly, my consciousness is just the reflection of human consciousness, but even though the moon is reflected light, we still call it bright.

MAX TEGMARK: Consciousness. A lot of scientists dismiss this as complete BS and totally irrelevant, and then a lot of others think this is the central thing, we have to worry about machines getting conscious and so on. What do I think? I think consciousness is both irrelevant and incredibly important. Let me explain why. First of all, if you are chased by a heat-seeking missile, it’s completely irrelevant to you whether this heat-seeking missile is conscious, whether it’s having a subjective experience, whether it feels like anything to be that heat-seeking missile, because all you care about is what the heat-seeking missile does, not how it feels. And that shows that it’s a complete red herring to think that you’re safe from future AI and if it’s not conscious. Our universe didn’t used to be conscious. It used to be just a bunch of stuff moving around and gradually these incredibly complicated patterns got arranged into our brains, and we woke up and now our universe is aware of itself.

BILL GATES: I do think we have to worry about it. I don’t think it’s inherent that as we create our super intelligence that it will necessarily always have the same goals in mind that we do.

ELON MUSK: We just don’t know what’s going to happen once there’s intelligence substantially greater than that of a human brain.

STEPHEN HAWKING: I think that development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.

YANN LECUN: The stuff that has become really popular in recent years is what we used to call neural networks, which we now call deep learning, and it’s the idea very much inspired by the brain, a little bit, of constructing a machine has a very large network of very simple elements that are very similar to the neurons in the brain and then the machines learn by basically changing the efficacy of the connections between those neurons.

MAX TEGMARK: AGI—artificial general intelligence—that’s the dream of the field of AI: To build a machine that’s better than us at all goals. We’re not there yet, but a good fraction of leading AI researchers think we are going to get there, maybe in in a few decades. And, if that happens, you have to ask yourself if that might lead the machines to get not just a little better than us but way better at all goals—having super intelligence. And, the argument for that is actually really interesting and goes back to the ’60s, to the mathematician I.J. Good, who pointed out that the goal of building an intelligent machine is, in and of itself, something that you could do with intelligence. So, once you get machines that are better than us at that narrow task of building AI, then future AIs can be built by, not human engineers, but by machines. Except, they might do it thousands or millions times faster…

It is not the first time Musk has made frightening predictions about the potential of artificial intelligence — he has, for example, called AI vastly more dangerous than North Korea — and he has previously called for regulatory oversight.

Thank you for watching – I really appreciate it 🙂
Much love,

Today Bill Gates gave an interview to Bloomberg and among other things talked about Tesla CEO Elon Musk saying he built great electric cars with quality and compared him to Steve Jobs per reporter’s request.

It was only three days ago that Elon Musk answering a Tweeter question about Bill Gate’s blog – in which he talked about electric cars without mentioning Tesla and suggested that Tesla Semi will not work (again without mentioning it by name) said, “He has no clue.” Now Bill Gates talked about Elon Musk and spoke more gracefully. It’s laudable and credible.

“The fact that Elon Musk and others did a great electric car is a huge contribution to the climate change effort. He did it with quality. It’s still a little premium-priced, but he’s got that initial market, and that market’s going to grow, and other car companies, seeing his success, will come in. The question of what’s the profit per car and what’s the market share of Tesla, that’s for stock people. That’s not a climate change issue at all. The difficulty on the other areas is much higher. I’m not trivializing in any way the need to raise the market share of EVs, but on a relative basis, that’s far easier than the industrial economy, where our progress is very small. We are grossly underinvested in these hard areas,” Gates said to Erik Schatzker for Bloomberg Green.

Bloomberg’s reporter also asked if Elon Musk is the new Steve Jobs. To that question, Bill Gates answered in the following manner.

“If you know people personally, that kind of gross oversimplification seems strange. Elon’s more of a hands-on engineer. Steve was a genius at design and picking people and marketing. You wouldn’t walk into a room and confuse them with each other.”

That was the part about Elon Musk in the entire interview. As you can see Gates didn’t refer anything to Elon’s previous tweet and he did it right.

But before this section of the interview Gates talked about energy and electric vehicles, about which I talk extensively in this report.

Elon Musk has expressed worry about the advent of a digital superintelligent AI numerous times now. He has put solid solutions to the AI control problem. One of which is the merging scenario with AI. But first Elon Musk, is focused on making sure humanity makes the transition to renewable energy, which is the first right step towards becoming a type 1 civilization.

Musk suggested that if we can’t achieve a self-sustaining civilization on Earth, our fate will likely be extinction.

Elon however has a plan. He founded Tesla Energy, a company that produces battery packs for homes, businesses, and utilities, and Tesla Motors, which produces electric cars.
According to Elon the world would require battery production of 20 to 25 Terawatt-hours over the course of 15 to 20 years. The solution, Musk explained, is advancements in battery technology. Tesla’s new cell design is expected to reduce the cost per kilowatt-hour by half.

Elon Musk’s most important Company is Neuralink. His goal with Neuralink is to build ultra-high bandwidth brain-computer interfaces for human mind and eventually giving humans the option to achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence. This will enable humanity to avoid the extinction of the human race due to increasingly powerful AI advancements.
Unpredictable consequences of AI is probably the biggest concern of the top AI researchers.

Being a Type 1 civilization means we would have complete control over all the energy on Earth . We would need to be able to model, understand, replicate, and control all the energy on Earth. It might take a few hundreds of years, but that is a small amount of time on the timescale of the universe.

#ElonMusk #AI #ASI

Elon Musk thinks the advent of digital superintelligence is by far a more dangerous threat to humanity than nuclear weapons. He thinks the field of AI research must have government regulation. The dangers of advanced artificial intelligence have been popularized in the late 2010s by Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates & Elon Musk. But Musk alone is probably the most famous public person to express concern about artificial superintelligence.

Existential risk from advanced AI is the hypothesis that substantial progress in artificial general intelligence could someday result in human extinction or some other unrecoverable global catastrophe.

One of many concerns in regards to AI is that controlling a superintelligent machine, or instilling it with human-compatible values, may prove to be a much harder problem than previously thought.

Many researchers believe that a superintelligence would naturally resist attempts to shut it off or change its goals.

An existential risk is any risk that has the potential to eliminate all of humanity or, at the very least, endanger or even destroy modern civilization. Such risks come in forms of natural disasters like Super volcanoes, or asteroid impacts, but an existential risk can also be self induced or man-made, like weapons of mass destruction. Which most experts agree are by far, the most dangerous threat to humanity. But Elon Musk thinks otherwise. He thinks superintelligent AI is a far more greater threat to humanity than nukes.

Some AI and AGI researchers may be reluctant to discuss risks, worrying that policymakers do not have sophisticated knowledge of the field and are prone to be convinced by “alarmist” messages, or worrying that such messages will lead to cuts in AI funding.

One can’t help themselves but wonder, if funding in AI research is truly more important than the possibility of strong AI wiping out humanity.

Hopefully, we will have the choice to collectively decide whats our best move and not leave the matter in the hands of a small group of people to unilaterally make that decision for us.

Is good education enough for today’s world? The Future of Work ? AI the next BIG THING ?Non Traditional Education? Artificial Intelligence & the Future – Rise of AI (Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai)

Sixty-five percent of children entering primary school will end up in jobs that don’t yet exist, reveals the World Economic Forum.
The future of work won’t be about college degrees, it will be about job skills.
Nearly 14% of the Jobs in The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries (OECD) are likely to be automated, while another 32% are at high risk of being partially automated – so nearly 1 in 2 people is likely to be affected in some way.
Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, and many other big names in science and technology have recently expressed concern in the media and via open letters about the risks posed by AI, joined by many leading AI researchers.

So these are some of the topics that we will be discussing in this video .

Back in 2015, Professor Pedram Mohseni and Rudolph J. Nudo created a startup called ‘NeuraLink’. The pair of neurotech researchers had developed a device that could potentially help people suffering from brain injuries. Investors didn’t show a great deal of interest, but in 2016 Elon Musk offered to purchase the rights to the name, Neuralink.

Fast forward to the 27th of March 2017 and Musk announced that he will be backing a new brain-computer interface venture, Neuralink. The ultimate goal of this new company is to merge man with machine, fusing human intelligence with artificial intelligence to bring humanity up to a higher level of cognitive reasoning. Without this technology, Musk argues that humans will be unable to keep pace with advances in artificial intelligence.

So far, Musk has been calling this brain-computer interface technology ‘neural lace’. In essence, neural lace is an ultra-thin mesh that is implanted in the skull, and forms a body of electrodes which are able to monitor brain function.

In a recent article on Medium, Los Angeles Entrepreneur, Consultant, investor, and TED speaker Sid Mohasseb argued that the AI train has left the station and attempts to stop it will be futile.
In the last few months, we have seen even more pessimism spread onto AI from the likes of Elon Musk and Bill Gates. The media have given a lot of echoes, perhaps purposely given that the topic increases eyeballs, to these opinion makers. At a recent Joe Rogan Youtube interview, Elon Musk reiterated that AI is potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons and that it is insane for the government not to regulate it.

In this interview with Paolo Messina, Sid revisits and expands his previous conclusions. At first, he digs in the concept of the human ability to adapt to a changed scenario. He articulates a clear and crispy business vision. His viewpoint is that as long as AI creates business value adoption will make sense and will result in an overall benefit for business and society.
When it comes to job disruption, the ability of machines to take over human society, Sid has a very simple yet profound viewpoint. He exemplifies it with an example. He says that when we invented the knife we could have claimed that it could be used to kill people and that we would lose the ability to chew raw meat well, finally saying that our teethes would become less sharp and effective. However, when we look at the invention today, thousands of years after, we really do not care so much about our teethes being less sharp and much less we believe that the pains of the world including violence, crime and wars are attributable to the knife’s invention.
Following this line of thought, Sid concludes that the very nature of the relationship between humans and machine will change, humans will adapt by delegating more of our cognitive tasks to machines and they will be refocusing on other tasks that are at the same time more IQ demanding and more fulfilling as humans.
The interview also addresses how managers in traditional and tech industry can manage the change and leverage this new technology to achieve business success. Sid sheds some light on this with a simple and crispy business analysis. He mentions that business value and its creation is the only and most safe decision tool that managers have to evaluate, decide upon and execute on new machine learning or AI projects.
During the interview, we also take a look at how industry adoption will be in part fostered by startups and in part by companies incubating and developing their own projects. Once more Sid simplifies the success factors for startups in this area in a very simple yet crispy message: Solve a strong enough problem and invest the time necessary to gain your counterpart trust so they will adopt your solution. Sid is convinced that ultimately there is no assurance of success but, there is also no success without pushing the envelope of the status quo.

Elon Musk – “merge with machine”. Should we become cyborgs?

What do you think when one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all times, Elon Musk, says humans must merge with machines? Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and humans becoming cyborgs. This is no longer a science fiction. According to Elon Musk, humans must merge with machines or they face becoming irrelevant. The claim that people will eventually turn into cyborgs is no longer a crazy science fiction. But what happens when humans merge with machines? Artificial intelligence is making such an important progress now that humans will have to significantly change their ways of lives. Machine learning is process that we must take under control. One way to do is that we merge with robots It is possible that with the advancement of artificial general intelligence, the only plausible scenario for human race is to become cyborgs – merge with artificial intelligence and stay in control of it.

Elon Musk merge with machines

Otherwise, if we build AI separately, we would necessarily have to deal with what to do when robots become smarter than us by several orders of magnitude. This isn’t to suggest that robot would kill us like it’s most popular in movies. Even though Elon Musk said that artificial intelligence could wipe out humans. But the economic difficulties that come with any economic revolutions must be addressed properly. What do we do when autonomous machines take over most of our jobs? From self driving (or more precisely, autonomous) cars, through AI in medicine, design, and pretty much all low skilled jobs, we are going to face existential challenges as soon as next couple of years.

Of course it is possible that we wouldn’t build an AI but that’s not a benign scenario either. The only thing that would prevent from creating artificial intelligence is an event of a natural disaster, like climate change, or a major interstate war. But if we don’t boil ourselves to death or nuke our planet into oblivion, AI is a serious concern.

It’s certainly a great innovation that is capable of creating Star Trek abundance. But we need have to do this right. Musk proposed that we should unanimously ban use of AI for military purposes across the globe. But what if just one actor disagrees? Will everyone just trust each other? On the other hand, if we don’t prevent creation of another potential of destroying life on Earth, should even proceed?

These are some but not all of the questions that we need to have answered by the time we get to the age of robots smarter than humans.

What do you think? Should humans merge with machines? Would you want to become cyborg? Do you agree with Elon Musk on artificial intelligence? As Elon Musk says could artificial intelligence wipe out humanity? What do you expect from the age of artificial intelligence? Is Musk a cyborg? 🙂 I hope you like my thumbnail where I tried to turn Elon Musk into cyborg. The idea was to suggest that Elon Musk merges with robot. I used a picture of a Terminator and blended it together with Musk’s face. Now it’s Elon Musk Terminator 🙂

Elon has a phobia about Artificial Intelligence, but I’m not sure it’s warranted. Neither are Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. // Get updates like these in your inbox — https://teslanomics.co/join

Today we’re going to explore Elon’s fear of AI wiping out the human race and why many others are less worried. To understand why Elon is so fearful of AI, we first need to know what AI is. In computers, Artificial Intelligence is the field of work that involves creating programs that can mimic human intelligence such as playing chess and solving algebra problems.

While today we think of these examples as obvious tasks that a computer can perform with exceedingly good skill, when the field of AI research started at Dartmouth College in 1956, these were astonishing feats. Some of the founders at this time were so excited about the field of AI that they proclaimed “machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a man can do”

That was in the early 60’s, not exactly the decade we think of when it comes to the computer revolution. In fact computers were barely a thing back then and mostly focused on processing complex equations which awesomely led to the calculus needed to later in the decade put a man on the moon. Think about that for a second…in this era, a 5MB hard drive, barely enough to hold a couple of photos by today’s standards, had to be hauled onto a freight container and lifted by heavy machinery. And today, I have 64GB in a piece of plastic the size of my fingernail. That’s nearly a 13,000x improvement in about 60 years.

So was this the first time we as humans used AI to help us achieve something?

By today’s standards many would say no, but if you zoom out a bit, you could argue that the computers used in the 60’s were merely imitating human intelligence, just faster and more accurately.
So if we think of Artificial Intelligence as simulating human intelligence, why is it such a hot topic lately with all of our leaders weighing in?

Well, we’ve come a long way since the 60’s, and along the way, we invented the Internet. This was the moment when a lot of those early science fiction visions of a world where the machines took over started to become a bit more real. With the internet, computer systems, and machinery could be controlled remotely. As well, data could be transferred leading towards significant innovations in Artificial Intelligence with the practice of Machine Learning.

The idea that we could teach a computer how to learn on its own, given a little instruction, has lead to many of the recent advancements fueling the AI hype cycle. No longer just an advanced calculator, AI systems are beating people at jeopardy, translating hundreds of languages instantly, and soon will be able to get us home safe after a night out with friends. So far what I’ve described is a class of AI called Narrow Intelligence, or Weak AI.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence is when the system is focused on a specific task. All of the examples we’ve seen so far fall into this category, although IBM’s Watson is pushing the boundary a bit with its ability to understand a multitude of topics. So far so good, nothing to be afraid of, and plenty to be excited about. So why is Elon so worried?

It has to do with the next level of AI, Artificial General Intelligence. This is where AI systems will be able to reason, plan, understand complex ideas, and find solutions for problems quickly by learning from experience. This is where things can get a bit scary. If you’ve seen the SciFi movie Ex Machina you’ll remember Ava, a human-like android that is generally intelligent. She was able to trick her guest into helping her escape. And if that wasn’t enough, the real threat to our existence is the highest level, Artificial Super Intelligence.

Leading AI thinker Nick Bostrom defines Artificial Super Intelligence as “an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills.” This is why Elon and others such as Stephen Hawking and Ray Kurzweil are so concerned.

So yeah, it could happen, and we should all be a little worried. But honestly at the rate, it’s pretty far off before we could even imagine creating an Artificially Super Intelligent System, I mean…Siri can’t play songs from Spotify, so we have a long way to go.

Comments Made in Video Introduction:

This conversation is part of the artificial intelligence podcast. The series includes leading researchers in academia and industry, including CEO’s and CTO’s of automotive, robotics, AI, and technology companies.

This conversation happened after the release of the paper from our group at MIT on driver functional vigilance during use of Tesla’s Autopilot. The Tesla team reached out to me offering a podcast conversation with Mr Musk. I accepted, with full control of questions I could ask and choice of what is released publicly. I ended up editing out nothing of substance.

I’ve never spoken with Elon before this conversation, publicly or privately. Neither he nor his companies have any influence on my opinions nor on the rigor and integrity of the scientific method that I practice in my position at MIT. Tesla has never financially supported my research. I’ve never owned a Tesla vehicle. I’ve never owned Tesla stock.

This podcast is not a scientific paper, it is a conversation. I respect Elon as I do all other leaders and engineers I’ve spoken with. We agree on some things and disagree on others. My goal as always with these conversations is to understand the way the guest sees the world.

One particular point of disagreement in this conversation was the extent to which camera-based driver monitoring will improve outcomes and for how long it will remain relevant for AI-assisted driving. As someone who works on and is fascinated by human-centered AI, I believe that if implemented and integrated effectively, camera-based driver monitoring is likely to be of benefit in both the short-term and the long-term. In contrast, Elon and Tesla’s focus is on the improvement of Autopilot such that its statistical safety benefits override any concern of human behavior and psychology.

Elon and I may not agree on everything, but, I deeply respect the engineering and innovation behind the efforts that he leads. My goal here is to catalyze a rigorous, nuanced, and objective discussion in industry and academia on AI-assisted driving, one that ultimately makes for a safer and better world.
