Our opinions of AI have been formed by mainstream media, but that stops now. We’re joined by New York Times best-selling author, Martin Ford to talk about what’s exciting, what’s scary, and what’s to come from machine learning. In his new book, Ford records the conversations he has had with the very people developing artificial intelligence.

Martin Ford explores the ways in which AI and automation (aka, “robots”) are outpacing humans in a range of sectors, from education to law, agriculture to healthcare, management and beyond. He offers a realistic view of what the future of work—and your place in it—will look like. Beyond pragmatic concerns, Ford addresses a bigger question: can accelerating technology disrupt our entire economic system to the point where a fundamental restructuring is required? This next industrial revolution, Ford argues, will not be like the last one. In the past, even as jobs were eliminated, jobs were created to replace them.

Martin Ford is a prominent futurist, best-selling author, and leading expert on artificial intelligence and robotics and their potential impact on the job market, economy and society. His new book Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future warns that rapid advances in robotics and artificial intelligence are going fundamentally disrupt the world economy and your job just might be a lot more replaceable than you think. We talk about which jobs are most susceptible AI and Robotics and why it’s not going to be limited to just low-skilled manufacturing jobs. We discuss the ways it could fundamentally change our society and lead to mass uneployment, unrest, and a huge expansion of the government social safety net.

Martin Ford is a New York Times Best-Selling Author. His book “The Rise Of The Robots” was the business book of the year in 2015.

This was probably one of my favourite interviews so far. Martin is a visionary regarding AI and robotics.

And in the interview, we both cover the “blue-collar” aspect. But more importantly, we dive into the white-collar disruption.

What are the future jobs that are most likely still safe? Martin picks two areas.

I am sure, you will enjoy the session as much as I did. And at the beginning of the episode, I have something special for you.

So enjoy!

Episode Summary:

Few astrophysicists are as decorated as Martin Rees, Baron Rees of Ludlow, who was a primary contributor to the big-bang theory and named to the honorary position of UK’s astronomer royal in 1995. His work has explored the intersections of science and philosophy, as well as human beings’ contextual place in the universe. In his book “Our Final Century”, published in 2003, Rees warned about the dangers of uncontrolled scientific advance, and argued that human beings have a 50 percent chance of surviving past the year 2100 as a direct result. In this episode, I asked him why he considers AI to be among one of the foremost existential risks that society should consider, as well as his thoughts around how we might best regulate AI and other emerging technologies in the nearer term.

In just a few year’s time, it will be the year 2025, and that is the year the world will change forever?

Why? Because 2025 is when your computer will have the same processing power as the human brain.

And then just 18 months later, it will be twice as fast, and then 18 months later, four times faster, as Moore’s law continues its exponential rise.

Combined with the recent developments in AI and physical robotics, the world is about to change in a way that’s difficult to comprehend.

The careers of Driver’s, Doctor’s, lawyers, financial advisors, customer service agents, teachers, truckers, soldiers, and more are all at risk of disappearing within the next 15 years.

Which poses an incredible question when you realize that there will be around 8 billion people on the planet, who all need work, who all need to earn a living, and who all need a purpose.

What will my six year old son Chase possibly be able to do in 20 years, that a superhuman robot can’t? What will your children do, and what will you do?

What can you do today to create financial security for yourself and your children in a world without jobs?

The time to start thinking strategically about these changes is now, because your future will not look like your parent’s.

To help us navigate what’s to come, we’re joined by Silicon Valley CEO, and author of the New York Times Best-Selling book, Rise of The Robots, Martin Ford.

Martin Ford is a futurist and the founder of a Silicon Valley-based software development firm. He has over 25 years experience in the fields of computer design and software development. He holds a computer engineering degree from the University of Michigan and a graduate business degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Martin is an expert on the subject of accelerating progress in robotics and artificial intelligence—and what these advances mean for the economy, job market and society of the future.

1. The decimation of the value of human labor due to technology has been proclaimed and proven wrong for time immemorial. Humans have always found new ways to contribute and avoid obsolescence, transitioning from hunter gatherers to farmers to manufacturing workers to service providers. Why is this time different?
2. Why are white collar jobs the most at risk? Are there any industries that may be a last stand for human labor?
3. What are the investment implications of a world where robots allow for most of the gains to flow through to capital owners and there’s nothing left for labor? Are we heading toward a type of technofeudalism?
4. I lean libertarian in my views, but you convincingly advocate for a basic guaranteed income, which sounds very socialist on the surface. I was surprised to see Friedrich Hayek was also a strong proponent. Can you explain your reasoning, especially in the context as a technological dividend for society?
5. In your view, does the singularity look more like the movie Wall-E where humans become feeble and are cared for by benevolent robots, or more like The Matrix where the robots eventually want to enslave us to protect themselves from humans pulling the plug? Or maybe a third option?

Listen to Martin Ford’s views on what the rise of AI implies for jobs and the economy.

Silicon Valley entrepeneur Martin Ford discusses the impact of technology on jobs and the economy. Mr. Ford talks about how the increasing use of artificial intelligence could make “good jobs” obsolete. Mr. Ford suggests that many jobs like paralegals, physicians and even computer programmers are poised to be replaced by robots.

M&G’s Jim Leaviss interviews Martin Ford, author of Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future.

While technology is often heralded as a boon for productivity, in reality it hasn’t brought the improvements we might have expected in recent times. Nevertheless, as Ford explains, machines are increasingly capable of taking over a lot of the work currently done by humans.

Sceptics may argue that we have faced such challenges before. But the difference today is that machines are starting to be capable of thought. As such, it is not only manual jobs that will be under threat from robots operating in factories. Many types of routine computer-based tasks can also be automated using software.

These developments may help corporate profitability in the short-term, as firms become more efficient. But there are more worrying implications longer term: if too few people are either in the workforce or earning decent wages, who will generate demand for the products that robots are producing? After all, as Ford explains, robots don’t earn salaries.

If we see a leisure society, where there is no longer a need to work, as the most optimistic outcome, what needs to happen for it to be achieved? Ford believes that governments and populations must accept the need for unprecedented economic policies, and that an eventual move towards guaranteed incomes for all is in some sense inevitable.

Martin Ford: Technological Unemployment is an Issue We Need To Discuss

Technological unemployment is an issue that I have mentioned a few times during my past interviews. In fact, I would go as far as saying that it is at the bottom of the top 5 biggest problems humanity faces today. So while it may not be the very biggest issue we face right now, it definitely is a huge challenge that, if not resolved, has the potential to impact negatively on a variety of other ones – from global warming to economic growth and social stability. And so today’s interview is devoted exclusively on technological unemployment and I am very happy to discuss it with Martin Ford, who has written two best-selling books on the topic: Lights in the Tunnel and Rise of the Robots.

During our 70 min conversation with Martin Ford we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: Martin’s background as a small software entrepreneur in Silicon Valley; his interest in technological unemployment and whether it is ok that Robot’s Will Steal Your Job; why this time automation is fundamentally different from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; whether education and hard work are enough for success; the dangers and possible implications of high technological unemployment; the proposal for Guaranteed Minimum Income; the incentives to work, capitalism and the need for systemic change…
