This talk will focus on creating a production machine learning pipeline using TFX. Using TFX developers can implement machine learning pipelines capable of processing large datasets for both modeling and inference. In addition to data wrangling and feature engineering over large datasets, TFX enables detailed model analysis and versioning. The talk will focus on implementing a TFX pipeline and a discussion of current topics in model understanding.

“Building Intelligent Computer Systems With Large Scale Deep Learning”

For the past five years, the Google Brain team (g.co/brain) has conducted research on difficult problems in artificial intelligence, on building large-scale computer systems for machine learning research, and, in collaboration with many teams at Google, on
applying our research and systems to dozens of Google products. Our group has opensourced the TensorFlow system (tensorflow.org), a widely popular system designed to easily express machine learning ideas, and to quickly train, evaluate and deploy machine learning systems. In this talk, I’ll highlight some of the design decisions we made in building TensorFlow; discuss research results produced within our group in areas such as computer vision, language understanding, translation, health care and robotics; and describe ways in which these ideas have been applied to a variety of problems in Google’s products, usually in close collaboration with other teams. I will also touch on some exciting areas of research that we are currently pursuing within our group. This talk describes joint work with many people at Google.

Building reliable, robust software is hard. It is even harder when we move from deterministic domains (such as balancing a checkbook) to uncertain domains (such as recognizing speech or objects in an image). The field of machine learning allows us to use data to build systems in these uncertain domains, but the field mostly concentrates on accuracy of results. Peter Norvig looks at techniques for achieving reliability (and some of the other -ilities).

Famous codebreaker and computer scientist Alan Turing’s legend has grown through books and films such as The Imitation Game, and it has become a challenge to discern the real man from the story. Now, Alan Turing’s nephew, Sir Dermot Turing, has taken a fresh look at the influences on Alan Turing’s life and creativity in his new biography Prof: Alan Turing Decoded.

Dermot Turing was educated at Sherborne and King’s College, Cambridge. After completing his DPhil in Genetics at New College, Oxford, Dermot joined the legal profession. This is his first biography, and the first written by a family member. He is a trustee of Bletchley Park, the UK headquarters for codebreaking during WWII.

“Deep Learning to Solve Challenging Problems”

For the past seven years, the Google Brain team (g.co/brain) has conducted research on difficult problems in artificial intelligence, on building large-scale computer systems for machine learning research, and, in collaboration with many teams at Google, on applying our research and systems to many Google products. Our group has open-sourced the TensorFlow system (tensorflow.org), a widely popular system designed to easily express machine learning ideas, and to quickly train, evaluate and deploy machine learning systems. We have also collaborated closely with Google’s platforms team to design and deploy new computational hardware called Tensor Processing Units, specialized for accelerating machine learning computations. In this talk, I’ll highlight some of our research accomplishments, and will relate them to the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Engineering Challenges for the 21st Century, including the use of machine learning for healthcare, robotics, and engineering the tools of scientific discovery. I’ll also cover how machine learning is transforming many aspects of our computing hardware and software systems.
Jeff received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1996, working with Craig Chambers on whole-program optimization techniques for object-oriented languages. He received a B.S. in computer science & economics from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS), and a winner of the ACM Prize in Computing.

Jeff Dean discusses the future of artificial intelligence and deep learning. This talk highlights Google research projects in healthcare, robotics, and in developing hardware to bring deep learning capability to smaller devices such as smart phones to enable solutions in remote and under-resourced locations. This talk was part of the AI in Real Life series presented by the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University in Autumn 2018.

Description and philosophy of the D-Wave superconducting processor and quantum annealing algorithms.

About the speaker: Geordie Rose is a founder and CTO of D-Wave. He is known as a leading advocate for quantum computing and physics-based processor design, and has been invited to speak on these topics in venues ranging from the 2003 TED Conference to Supercomputing 2008.

His innovative and ambitious approach to building quantum computing technology has received coverage in MIT Technology Review magazine, The Economist, New Scientist, Scientific American and Science magazines, and one of his business strategies was profiled in a Harvard Business School case study. He has received several awards and accolades for his work with D-Wave, including being short-listed for a 2005 World Technology Award.

Dr. Rose holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of British Columbia, specializing in quantum effects in materials. While at McMaster University, he graduated first in his class with a BEng in Engineering Physics, specializing in semiconductor engineering.

We’ll show you how to use Google Docs to transcribe your voice. All you need to do is enable the feature, and then you’ll be able to simply talk, and Google Docs will convert it to text.

While the speech recognition isn’t perfect, it is possible to correct errors. You can right-click underlined words to select a suggested change, and you can even use voice commands to make changes. In the video, we’ll go over some basic voice commands you can use.

Brin’s best-selling science fiction novels include The Postman (filmed in 1997), Startide Rising (Nebula Award winner), The Uplift War (Hugo Award winner), and Earth. His non-fiction work, The Transparent Society, won the American Library Association’s Freedom of Speech Award for exploring 21st Century concerns about security, secrecy, accountability, and privacy. Brin holds a PhD in Physics from the University of California at San Diego, a masters in optics, and an undergraduate degree in astrophysics from Caltech.
