Conversational interfaces have emerged as a new way to interact with AI assistants on smartphones, smart speakers, and other devices. However, questions have been raised about the usability of these systems and whether the technologies are sufficiently mature. There are two main approaches to the development of conversational systems: the traditional approach in which systems are designed according to best practice guidelines and the behaviours of the systems and based on handcrafted rules; and the new paradigm of conversational AI in which systems are trained from data using various machine learning techniques. The pros and cons of each approach are highlighted. The presentation concludes with a recommendation that in addition to focusing on technical issues it is also important to consider issues relating to user experience by eliciting user requirements in a process of co-creation and conducting detailed studies of how users actually engage with conversational systems in everyday situations. The need for conversational agents rise to support natural interfaces for ambient technologies such as the autonomous car, smart homes, consumer electronics including the mobile phones, clothings and many others. Because the devices used for ambient intelligence are usually small, low power, low weight, and more importantly low cost, an embedded speech ability that is practical for implementation as constrained by system usage is highly sought after. Existing implementation of whether speech-based or text-based dialogue systems are primarily developed upon natural language processing technology such as natural language understanding, dialogue management, and natural language generation. It is often tied to a specific domain to manage the dialogue management and information database. However, rather than a rigid architecture, the driving key to future ambient application development should capitalize on the concept of agency, hence the autonomous capability. Aida received her B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University and Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from UPM focusing on dialogue systems. At present, she is serving UTHM as the Deputy Director for Research Grant Management at the Research Management Center. Sherry Ruan Stanford University In the well-known two sigma problem introduced in 1984, Bloom found that students tutored by a one-on-one expert tutor achieved a learning outcome two standard deviations higher than those taught using traditional classroom methods. Since one-on-one tutoring is too costly to scale up to the majority of students, technology-based solutions have been suggested as promising solutions to simulate one-on-one human tutoring experiences. However, current automated computer-based tutors still primarily consist of learning activities with limited interactivity such as multiple-choice questions, review-and-flip flash cards, and listen-and-repeat practices. These tutors tend to be unengaging and thus their effectiveness typically relies on students’ desire to learn. With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), we now have the potential to create conversation-based tutoring systems with the ability to provide personalized feedback to make learning more engaging and effective and eventually help bridge the gap between one-on-one human tutoring and computer-based tutoring. In this dissertation, I present the design, development, and testing of four AI-based conversational tutoring systems that personalize learning for adults and children. For adult learning, I present two systems: QuizBot for helping college students learn factual knowledge and EnglishBot for tutoring second language learners in speaking English. Conversational interfaces are increasingly becoming a preferred way for users to engage with information. This is particularly true for younger users. Conversational interfaces offer a more personalized user experience, as well as, a means to walk a user through a potentially complex series of requirements. That ability to determine the user’s intent, combined with the ability to step them through a series of relevant questions makes it particularly well suited for interfacing with artificial intelligence systems which often require precisely structured input to deliver meaningful insight. The presentation will provide an overview of conversational interfaces, integration with front end communications channels, and back end artificial intelligence systems. An example will be shown which illustrates the end to end concepts covered. The presentation will use RASA Core, an open source Python machine learning based dialogue engine for conversational software, to show the process and benefits for training data on specific domains.
