Stuart Russell is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California and an author. Programming machines to do what we want them to is a challenge. The consequences of getting this wrong become very grave if that machine is superintelligent with essentially limitless resources and no regard for humanity’s wellbeing. Stuart literally wrote the textbook on Artificial Intelligence which is now used in hundreds of countries, so hopefully he’s got an answer to perhaps the most important question of this century. Expect to learn how artificial intelligence systems have already manipulated your preferences to make you more predictable, why social media companies genuinely don’t know what their own algorithms are doing, why our reliance on machines can be a weakness, Stuart’s better solution for giving machines goals, what the future of artificial intelligence holds and much more… Sponsors: Get 20% discount on the highest quality CBD Products from Pure Sport at (use code: MW20) Get perfect teeth 70% cheaper than other invisible aligners from DW Aligners at Extra Stuff: Buy Human Compatible – Get my free Reading List of 100 books to read before you die → To support me on Patreon (thank you): #artificialintelligence #controlproblem #computerscience – 00:00 Intro 00:33 King Midas & AI 06:07 Super-intelligent AI 11:48 Language Challenges 21:42 How AI Could Go Wrong 46:17 Social Media Algorithms 1:03:14 Becoming Enfeebled by Machines 1:20:44 Maintaining Control of AI Growth 1:42:23 Impacts of Stuart’s Work 1:48:01 Where to Find Stuart – [More]
AI is changing the world around us, making its way into businesses, health care, science and many other fields. In fact, most of us are happy to work daily with the all-knowing Google, the largest AI on Earth. Google; Golem; God: the associations are rather imposing. Will progress in Artificial Intelligence provide humanity with a boost of unprecedented strength to realize a better future, or could it present a threat to the very basis of human civilization? The future of artificial intelligence is up for debate, and the Origins Project is bringing together a distinguished panel of experts, intellectuals and public figures to discuss who’s in control. Eric Horvitz, Jaan Tallinn, Kathleen Fisher and Subbarao Kambhampati join Origins Project director Lawrence Krauss on Saturday, February 25th, 2017. Eric Horvitz is managing director of Microsoft Research’s main Redmond Lab, an American computer scientist, and technical fellow at Microsoft. Horvitz received his PhD and MD degrees at Stanford University, and has continued his research and work in areas that span theoretical and practical challenges of machine learning and inference, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and more. He is a fellow of numerous associations and academies, has received numerous awards, given both technical lectures and presentations for diverse audiences, and been featured in the New York Times and Technology Review. Jaan Tallinn is co-founder of Skype, Estonian programmer, investor and physicist. He is partner and co-founder of the development company Bluemoon, Board of Sponsors member of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and one [More]

China is the world leader in facial recognition technology. Discover how the country is using it to develop a vast hyper-surveillance system able to monitor and target its ethnic minorities, including the Muslim Uyghur population. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: Improving lives, increasing connectivity across the world, that’s the great promise offered by data-driven technology – but in China it also promises greater state control and abuse of power. This is the next groundbreaking development in data-driven technology, facial recognition. And in China you can already withdraw cash, check in at airports, and pay for goods using just your face. The country is the world’s leader in the use of this emerging technology, and China’s many artificial intelligence startups are determined to keep it that way in the future. Companies like Yitu. Yitu is creating the building blocks for a smart city of the future, where facial recognition is part of everyday life. This could even extend to detecting what people are thinking. But the Chinese government has plans to use this new biometric technology to cement its authoritarian rule. The country has ambitious plans to develop a vast national surveillance system based on facial recognition. It’ll be used to monitor it’s 1.4 billion citizens in unprecedented ways. With the capability of tracking everything from their emotions to their sexuality. The primary means will be a vast network of CCTV cameras. 170 million are already in place and an estimated 400 million new ones will [More]

Scared of superintelligent AI? You should be, says neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris — and not just in some theoretical way. We’re going to build superhuman machines, says Harris, but we haven’t yet grappled with the problems associated with creating something that may treat us the way we treat ants. The most important thing in this life – is to get prepared for the next life! — There is only one true way to ETERNAL LIFE. The scriptures say “that there is no other name under heaven, given unto men – by which we MUST BE SAVED” — That name is JESUS. Jesus christ of Nazareth – Yeshua hamashiach – Jesus messiah – the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON of GOD MOST HIGH. You MUST KNOW HIM – to have ever-lasting life. To know Him is not difficult – all you have to do is ask to know Him. Salvation through Jesus christ is the free gift of God – a gift gracefully given – by faith in Jesus alone. – It is freely given, not by your works – or any man’s works – or then we would be able to boast – “look what I DID…” — that’s not how grace and the free gift of God – operates. All you have to do is ASK and if you really want to know Him, you will. SEEK HIM today. TODAY is the day of salvation… You may download, copy, reuse, edit, distribute – ANYTHING – of the works presented here. [More]

Listen to the Science Salon Podcast # 118 (audio-only): In the popular imagination, superhuman artificial intelligence is an approaching tidal wave that threatens not just jobs and human relationships, but civilization itself. Conflict between humans and machines is seen as inevitable and its outcome all too predictable. In this groundbreaking book, distinguished AI researcher Stuart Russell argues that this scenario can be avoided, but only if we rethink AI from the ground up. Russell begins by exploring the idea of intelligence in humans and in machines. He describes the near-term benefits we can expect, from intelligent personal assistants to vastly accelerated scientific research, and outlines the AI breakthroughs that still have to happen before we reach superhuman AI. He also spells out the ways humans are already finding to misuse AI, from lethal autonomous weapons to viral sabotage. If the predicted breakthroughs occur and superhuman AI emerges, we will have created entities far more powerful than ourselves. How can we ensure they never, ever, have power over us? Russell suggests that we can rebuild AI on a new foundation, according to which machines are designed to be inherently uncertain about the human preferences they are required to satisfy. Such machines would be humble, altruistic, and committed to pursue our objectives, not theirs. This new foundation would allow us to create machines that are provably deferential and provably beneficial. Shermer and Russell also discuss: • natural intelligence vs. artificial intelligence • “g” in human intelligence vs. G in AGI (Artificial [More]

Ultimately, this podcast is a small side hobby for me with the goal of sharing and discussing ideas. For now, I post a few clips every Tue & Fri. I did a poll and 92% of people either liked or loved the posting of daily clips, 2% were indifferent, and 6% hated it, some suggesting that I post them on a separate YouTube channel. I hear the 6% and partially agree, so am torn about the whole thing. I tried creating a separate clips channel but the YouTube algorithm makes it very difficult for that channel to grow unless the main channel is already very popular. So for a little while, I’ll keep posting clips on the main channel. I ask for your patience and to see these clips as supporting the dissemination of knowledge contained in nuanced discussion.
