In this episode of Machine Learning Street Talk, Tim Scarfe, Connor Shorten and Yannic Kilcher react to Yoshua Bengio’s ICLR 2020 Keynote “Deep Learning Priors Associated with Conscious Processing”. Bengio takes on many future directions for research in Deep Learning such as the role of attention in consciousness, sparse factor graphs and causality, and the study of systematic generalization. Bengio also presents big ideas in Intelligence that border on the line of philosophy and practical machine learning. This includes ideas such as consciousness in machines and System 1 and System 2 thinking, as described in Daniel Kahneman’s book “Thinking Fast and Slow”. Similar to Yann LeCun’s half of the 2020 ICLR keynote, this talk takes on many challenging ideas and hopefully this video helps you get a better understanding of some of them! Thanks for watching! How to explain our inner awareness that is at once most common and most mysterious? Traditional explanations focus at the level of neuron and neuronal circuits in the brain. But little real progress has motivated some to look much deeper, into the laws of physics — information theory, quantum mechanics, even postulating new laws of physics. Consciousness is the Creator and User of technology in the material world. Consciousness extends itself into the material world through Water, which is the Architect of Nature. Humans are a combination of the two, Consciousness (water) and Matter, and we are now the new Architects of Nature. In this video we will discuss the question: Will AI / Technology ever gain its own consciousness and self awareness? Please subscribe and watch our lecture playlist to learn more about this subject. What does it mean for a robot to be self-aware? That’s exactly what this robotics lab is investigating as they embark on a quest towards artificial consciousness. *Please note: The quadruped robot is still a work in progress with results to come in the near future. »Subscribe to Seeker! »Watch more Focal Point | Read More: The Creative Machines Lab at Columbia University “At the Creative Machines Lab we build robots that do what you’d least expect robots to do: Self replicate, self-reflect, ask questions, and even be creative. Existential angst, ethical inquiries, theological considerations: these belong exclusively to the domain of Homo Sapiens. Or so we assume.” ____________________ Imagine living in a world where Westworld or I, Robot was our reality—how long do we have until science fiction becomes real? How can the physical universe give rise to a mind? I suggest to replace this confusing question by another one: what kind of information processing system is the mind, and how is the mind computed? As we will see, even our ideas of the physical universe turn out to be computational. Let us explore some fascinating scenery of the philosophy underlying Artificial Intelligence. Talk presented at the 31st Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, December 2014 (English version)

Is this hat conscious? New videos DAILY: Join Big Think Edge for exclusive video lessons from top thinkers and doers: ———————————————————————————- Panpsychism is the idea that there is an element of consciousness in everything in the universe. The theory goes like this: You’re conscious. Ben Goertzel is conscious. And his hat is conscious too. What if consciousness isn’t about the brain at all, but it’s as inherent to our universe as space-time?”Now, panpsychism, to me, is not even that interesting, it’s almost obvious — it’s just the foundation, the beginning for thinking about consciousness… ” says Goertzel. It’s what comes after that excites him, like the emerging technology that will let us connect our minds to bricks, hats, earthworms, other humans, and super AGIs like Sophia, and perhaps glimpse at the fabric of consciousness. Goertzel believes brain-brain interfacing and brain-computer interfacing will unfold in the coming decades, and it’s by that means that we may finally crack the nut of consciousness to discover whether panpsychism makes any sense, and to learn why humans are so differently conscious than, for example, his hat. ———————————————————————————- BEN GOERTZEL: Ben Goertzel is CEO and chief scientist at SingularityNET, a project dedicated to creating benevolent decentralized artificial general intelligence.
