About the Webinar Natural Language Processing (NLP) is rapidly becoming a requirement for application interfaces. Today, one can build a system that allows natural language text or speech input without knowing much more than a few API specs. From chatbots to search engine translation services to applications that scour social media posts looking for business opportunities or terror threats, Natural Language Understanding (NLU) is delivering value today. On the output side of the interface, natural language generation (NLG) has advanced from the production of restricted-domain question-answering and simulation systems to the delivery of general purpose data- or model-driven narratives that are virtually indistinguishable from human-generated correspondence. From sports to stock reports, you’ve probably read a machine-generated report in the past year without realizing that the “author” was a machine. Where do we go from here? It’s time to expand our definition of “natural language” to include the logical and physical context cues that we use in everyday communications to express emotions and intent unbounded by syntax and semantic constraints. In this webinar, we will look at emerging technologies to improve understanding by analyzing effect in gestures and language choices, and that improve engagement by delivering context-appropriate effective output.

In the area of visual analytics, natural language has been shown to help improve the overall cognition of visualization tasks. In this talk, Vidya will discuss how natural language can be leveraged in various aspects of the analytical workflow ranging from smarter data transformations, visual encodings, autocompletion to supporting analytical intent. More recently, chatbot systems have garnered interest as conversational interfaces for a variety of tasks. Machine learning approaches have proven to be promising for approximating the heuristics and conversational cues for continuous learning in a chatbot interface. Vidya will explore the implications for these data-driven approaches in broadening the scope for visual analysis workflows. She will also discuss the future directions for research and innovation in this space. The need for conversational agents rise to support natural interfaces for ambient technologies such as the autonomous car, smart homes, consumer electronics including the mobile phones, clothings and many others. Because the devices used for ambient intelligence are usually small, low power, low weight, and more importantly low cost, an embedded speech ability that is practical for implementation as constrained by system usage is highly sought after. Existing implementation of whether speech-based or text-based dialogue systems are primarily developed upon natural language processing technology such as natural language understanding, dialogue management, and natural language generation. It is often tied to a specific domain to manage the dialogue management and information database. However, rather than a rigid architecture, the driving key to future ambient application development should capitalize on the concept of agency, hence the autonomous capability. Aida received her B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University and Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from UPM focusing on dialogue systems. At present, she is serving UTHM as the Deputy Director for Research Grant Management at the Research Management Center. She has published more than 150 refereed publications in the area of Soft Computing, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Computational Linguistics and Software Agents. Conversational interfaces are increasingly becoming a preferred way for users to engage with information. This is particularly true for younger users. Conversational interfaces offer a more personalized user experience, as well as, a means to walk a user through a potentially complex series of requirements. That ability to determine the user’s intent, combined with the ability to step them through a series of relevant questions makes it particularly well suited for interfacing with artificial intelligence systems which often require precisely structured input to deliver meaningful insight. The presentation will provide an overview of conversational interfaces, integration with front end communications channels, and back end artificial intelligence systems. An example will be shown which illustrates the end to end concepts covered. The presentation will use RASA Core, an open source Python machine learning based dialogue engine for conversational software, to show the process and benefits for training data on specific domains.
