Professor Brian Cox explores the topic of artificial intelligence and its impact on our live and societal structures to use technology to improve the quality of living. The Turing test has long been a benchmark for machine intelligence. Named for the famed computer scientist Alan Turing, who proposed it in a 1950 paper, the Turing Test tasks a human evaluator with determining whether he is speaking with a human or a machine. If the machine can pass for human, then it’s passed the test. Besides the potential risks AI will bring about, Brian Cox also mentions the potential benefits of artificial intelligence. Stuart Russell is a Professor of Computer Science. He is one of the world’s most respected experts on artificial intelligence and addresses our collective unease around the rise of artificial intelligence, exploring the impact on jobs and the scope of ‘general purpose’ AI, from the humble domestic thermostat to the attention-hungry bleeps and pings that keep us glued to our smartphones. According to Russel. there are risks from poorly designed AI Systems. We have given them a free pass for far too long. “What role does metaethics play in AI alignment and safety? How might paths to AI alignment change given different metaethical views? How do issues in moral epistemology, motivation, and justification affect value alignment? What might be the metaphysical status of suffering and pleasure? What’s the difference between moral realism and anti-realism and how is each view grounded? And just what does any of this really have to do with AI? The Metaethics of Joy, Suffering, and AI Alignment is the fourth podcast in the new AI Alignment series, hosted by Lucas Perry. For those of you that are new, this series will be covering and exploring the AI alignment problem across a large variety of domains, reflecting the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of AI alignment. Broadly, we will be having discussions with technical and non-technical researchers across areas such as machine learning, AI safety, governance, coordination, ethics, philosophy, and psychology as they pertain to the project of creating beneficial AI. If this sounds interesting to you, we hope that you will join in the conversations by following us or subscribing to our podcasts on Youtube, SoundCloud, or your preferred podcast site/application. In this podcast, Lucas spoke with David Pearce and Brian Tomasik. David is a co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association, currently rebranded Humanity+. You might know him for his work on The Hedonistic Imperative, a book focusing on our moral obligation to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. Brian is a researcher at the Foundational Research [More]
Yale University’s Wu Tsai Institute and the Schmidt Program on Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies, and National Power co-host the talk, “The Alignment Problem: Machine Learning and Human Values,” by Brian Christian, an award-winning author and Science Communicator in Residence at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at University of California – Berkeley. Christian is recognized as a leading authority on artificial intelligence and the ethical challenges associated with emerging technologies. His latest book, “The Alignment Problem: Machine Learning and Human Values,” is a blend of history and on-the-ground reporting, tracing the explosive growth of machine learning and the wide range of resulting risks, opportunities, and unintended consequences. The book is a Los Angeles Times Finalist for Best Science & Technology Book of the Year, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has named it one of the five books that inspired him in 2021. Christian is the author of the acclaimed bestsellers “The Most Human Human” and “Algorithms to Live By.” His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as peer-reviewed journals. He holds degrees in computer science, philosophy, and poetry from Brown University and the University of Washington. The talk is moderated by John Lafferty, John C. Malone Professor of Statistics & Data Science, and Director of the Center for Neurocomputation and Machine Intelligence at Yale.
