Joscha Bach is a beautiful mind and a very rewarding interlocutor. No surprise I had many requests to have him back on my podcast. I apologize that it took 4 years but the good news is we are going to have a third conversation much sooner this time around. If you haven’t seen our first interview with Joscha I suggest you start there before you watch this one. Enjoy and don’t hesitate to let me know what you think. During our 2-hour conversation with Joscha Bach, we cover a variety of interesting topics such as his new job at Intel as an AI researcher; whether Moore’s Law is dead or alive; why he is first and foremost a human being trying to understand the world; the kinds of questions he would like to ask God or Artificial Superintelligence; the most recent AI developments and criticisms from Gary Marcus, Marvin Minsky, and Noam Chomsky; living in a learnable universe; evolution and the frame problem; intelligence, smartness, wisdom, and values; personal autonomy and the hive mind; cosmology, theology, story, existence, and non-existence. My favorite quotes that I will take away from this conversation with Joscha Bach are: “What is a model? A model is a set of regularities that we find in the world – the invariances like the Laws of Physics at a certain level of resolution, that describe how the world doesn’t change but is the same. [These are the things that remain constant.] And the state that the world [More]
Synopsis: The arrival of homo sapiens on Earth amounted to a singularity for its ecosystems, a transition that dramatically changed the distribution and interaction of living species within a relatively short amount of time. Such transitions are not unprecedented during the evolution of life, but machine intelligence represents a new phenomenon: for the first time, there are agents on earth that are not part of the biosphere. Instead of competing for a niche in the ecosystems of living systems, AI might compete with life itself. I’m (not) a robot – creative challenge with AIs and humans / What are the main differences between us and algorithms? How can we reveal AI technologies in our everyday lives and “make fun of them” or even use them as creative tools? In times of homeschooling, distance learning and social distancing our society is in close contact with Artificial Intelligences in everyday life. This international challenge is aimed at experimenting with AI through exploring the limits of humanness and robotness. On the 20th of May 2021, we presented a Kick-off event with thought-provoking talks and an introductory workshop about robot and human psychology, about how (and whether) machines can dream and examples of creative AI applications. For the challenge we are kicking off, we are inviting young people under the age of 21. The challenge meetings (1x-2x/month) will contain introductory talks by AI experts, creative workshops, games (and game-making), group work, mentorship and presentation opportunities between June 2021 and January 2022. The language of the challenge is English, it is open for international participants and it’s free. Joscha Bach is a rare mind. He is an artificial intelligence researcher that is sought out by people doing research to understand how the human mind works. He sat down with Vance Crowe for a second time to discuss if our world is in a more precarious place than in the past. Bach discusses what happens if a parent chooses not to download a religious software onto their child. Joscha Bach mention’s Paul Graham’s blog post. “Lies we tell kids.” http://www.paulgraham.com/lies.html They discuss the growing phenomenon of young women getting interested in astrology. Bach then discusses the increase in autism and some of the causes of the increases (changes to food, estrogen in the water) of a neural disorders that only occasionally creates a super power in high IQ individuals. Bach then gives an exceptional book review about three sci-fi novels: Dune, Foundation and The Three Body Problem.
