Algorithms are increasingly used to make life-changing decisions about health care benefits, who goes to jail, and more, and play a crucial role in pushing people towards extremism. Through a series of case studies, I want to debunk several misconceptions about bias and ethics in AI, and propose some healthier principles.

Winter Intelligence Oxford – AGI 12 – agi12

Continuing the mission of the first four AGI conferences, AGI-12@Oxford gathers an international group of leading academic and industry researchers involved in scientific and engineering work aimed directly toward the goal of artificial general intelligence. Appropriately for this Alan Turing centenary year, this is the first AGI conference to be held in the UK.

The AGI conferences are the only major conference series devoted wholly and specifically to the creation of AI systems possessing general intelligence at the human level and ultimately beyond. By gathering together active researchers in the field, for presentation of results and discussion of ideas, we accelerate our progress toward our common goal.

AGI-12@Oxford will feature contributed talks and posters, keynotes, and a Special Session on Neuroscience and AGI. It will be held immediately preceding the first conference on AGI Safety and Impacts, which is organized by Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute; AGI-12 registrants will receive free admission to the latter conference. Proceedings will be published as a book in Springer’s Lecture Notes in AI series.

“Artificial General Intelligence”

The original goal of the AI field was the construction of “thinking machines” — that is, computer systems with human-like general intelligence. Due to the difficulty of this task, for the last few decades the majority of AI researchers have focused on what has been called “narrow AI” — the production of AI systems displaying intelligence regarding specific, highly constrained tasks.

In recent years, however, more and more researchers have recognized the necessity — and feasibility — of returning to the original goals of the field. Increasingly, there is a call for a transition back to confronting the more difficult issues of “human level intelligence” and more broadly artificial general intelligence (AGI). The AGI conference series has played, and continues to play, a significant role in this resurgence of research on artificial intelligence in the deeper, original sense of the term.

Emerging technologies have unprecedented potential to solve some of the world’s most pressing issues. Among the most powerful — and controversial — is the gene-editing tech, CRISPR-Cas9, which will improve agricultural yields, cure genetic disorders, and eradicate infectious diseases like malaria. But CRISPR and other disruptive technologies, like brain-machine interfaces and artificial intelligence, also pose complex philosophical and ethical questions. Perhaps no one is better acquainted with these questions than Peter Diamandis, founder of the XPRIZE Foundation and co-founder of Singularity University and Human Longevity Inc. In this session, Peter will give a state of the union on the near future and explore the profound ethical implications we will face in the ongoing technological revolution.

Yoshua Bengio, considered one of the ‘Godfathers of Artificial Intelligence’ discusses Recurrent independent mechanisms, sample complexity, end-to-end adaptation, multivariate categorical MLP conditionals and more.

When summarising his talk, Professor Bengio gave three key points to keep in mind when ‘looking forward’

– We must build a world model which meta-learns causal effects in abstract space of causal variables. This requires a necessity to quickly adapt to change and generalize out-of-distribution by sparsely recombining modules

– The necessity to acquire knowledge and encourage exploratory behaviour

– The need to bridge the gap between the aforementioned system 1 and system 2 ways of thinking, with old neural networks and consciousness reasoning taken into account

US Immigration

USCIS have issued a bunch of policy changes for US visas and Green cards to reduce backlog and faster adjudication, such policy changes include, Biometrics cancellation for 24 months, conducting interviews over phone and even Interview waivers for certain applications. These policy changes may also Reduce rejections due to deference and elimination of prior policy. They are even reusing old biometrics for faster adjudication and simplified the process to reschedule biometric appointments.

Rescheduling Biometric Services Appointments by Phone.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today that applicants may now call the U.S.C.I.S Contact Center in the following telephone number, (800-375-5283) to reschedule their biometric services appointments scheduled at a U.S.C.I.S Application Support Center.

Suspended certain biometrics requirements for 24 months.
Starting May 17, 2021, U.S.C.I.S will temporarily suspend the in-person biometrics requirement for H, L and E derivative nonimmigrants, seeking extensions of stay and changes of status in the United States. The policy will remain in place through May 17, 2023, unless extended or revoked. During this time, applicant spouses and children filing Form I-539 for H, L & E derivative status will not be required to attend a biometrics appointment, for the capture of their fingerprints and photo.

Expansion of Interview Waiver Eligibility is also applied at the US consulates abroad. Department of Homeland Security, has temporarily expanded the ability of consular officers to waive the in-person interview requirement, for individuals applying for a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification.

USCIS has reverted back to the rejection criteria that existed before October 2019. U.S.C.I.S will no longer reject Form I-589, Form I-612 or Form I-918 if an applicant leaves a blank space. In the past, many applications are rejected citing this blank space policy.

The International Entrepreneur Rule (I.E.R.), first introduced by President Obama in 2017, permits foreign entrepreneurs to stay in the United States for up to five years as long as they own at least 10 percent of a startup and attract at least $250,000 from U.S. investors.

Immigrant Entrepreneur: Prateek Joshi

Show notes:

Prateek’s interest in machine learning/artificial intelligence came early on when he was growing up in India. Since there was lack of clean water where he grew up, he knew that there had to be a solution for this.

Every so often their family had to go to a place to get drinking water and do it over and over when supply was getting low. He started learning about water sources and machine learning early on and he grew such a passion for it.

When he came to USA at 27 years old to study Computer Vision on his Master’s program he knew this was only a beginning to his amazing journey.

He’s an author of 13 books all related to Python, machine learning and AI. He’s also taken the stage on TedX and has been featured on Forbes, 30 under 30 list.

Prateek is a young immigrant entrepreneur who manages his company of 35 employees and he’s thriving. In this episode he drops a lot of invaluable advice on entrepreneurship, growing his business, how it all started and raising capital.

Statement by Anya Daneez Khan, age 10, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February).

February 11th marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme for 2019 is “Investment in Women and Girls for Inclusive Green Growth,” and a two-day event began today (11 Feb) at UN Headquarters in New York, bringing together global experts and leaders to evaluate the economic and social impact of women’s participation in science-based sustainable development programmes.

The event featured a high-level panel focusing on the public-sector financing of science for green growth, investment to attract and retain high calibre women in science, and financing to ensure gender equality in science.

Anya Daneez Khan, a girl in the field of science, said “The reason we celebrate this Day is to make sure it becomes not a story about exceptional women but a norm that girls belong and succeed in science and technology.”

The United Nations General Assembly in 2015 declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve their empowerment as well as gender equality. presents Pie & AI: Real-world AI Applications in Medicine.
